which way is the woman spinning?

THE Right Brain vs Left Brain test ... do you see the dancer turning clockwise or anti-clockwise?

If clockwise, then you use more of the right side of the brain and vice versa.

Most of us would see the dancer turning anti-clockwise though you can try to focus and change the direction; see if you can do it.

LEFT BRAIN FUNCTIONS
uses logic
detail oriented
facts rule
words and language
present and past
math and science
can comprehend
knowing
acknowledges
order/pattern perception
knows object name
reality based
forms strategies
practical
safe

RIGHT BRAIN FUNCTIONS
uses feeling
"big picture" oriented
imagination rules
symbols and images
present and future
philosophy & religion
can "get it" (i.e. meaning)
believes
appreciates
spatial perception
knows object function
fantasy based
presents possibilities

Looks clockwise to me. And I'm right-handed, and pretty good with math and language, but I guess I'm also "fantasy-based." I don't really buy the right-brain/left-brain thing, though.

I showed it to my wife. She can make the dancer reverse by looking at her peripherally with one eye or the other -- which supports the left brain/right brain theory.

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.
pixiestu Posted - 10/13/2007 : 18:26:00
This is a conspiracy to make me think part of my brain doesn't work. There is just no way that anyone can see her going anticlockwise! Anyone who says they can is a liar! A LIAR!!!

Or maybe my brain just really doesn't work :(

I thought it was crap, too.

Seriously though, I can only see it on the original pic with the shadow. I can't see her go counter clockwise on the one without
the shadow.

Ok... I have finally seen her go counter clockwise. I had to focus on the shadow of her foot going in and out of the
picture then I was able to see it.

If that helps anybody...

toeknee Posted - 10/12/2007 : 16:46:46
I could only see it going anti-clockwise, and had to really strain to see the other way.

Though I am a left-handed language student.
trobrianders Posted - 10/12/2007 : 16:23:38
I'm getting her to switch on cue by imagining it first, then looking for confirmation. And I think you can time a switch when her outstretched toe is is at edge of frame.

Freaky to see that when she's turning clock it's her right leg outstretched but left when she's turning counter-clock. What we're fooled by I think is there's very little difference between her front and back in silhouette.

When I first stared at the image above....totally counterclockwise, read your post, looked up, totally going clockwise. Damn! If I could just make the switch on cue!
hammerhands Posted - 10/12/2007 : 15:49:34

It took me a while to get her to switch to counter-clockwise, but here are two methods.

1. look at her out in your peripheral vision, it works best for me out of the left eye.

2. cover her body, the leg may appear to swing in from 6 O'clock.
pixiestu Posted - 10/12/2007 : 14:40:18
I just can't see it going anticlockwise at all. I'm right handed.

I am a bit late here, and feel very out of place. I think this is some cruel trick. First time I looked...all I could see was counterclockwise...waited a couple hours....now all I see is clockwise. I bet if I go back and look at it again it will change again. Whatever it is it is a pretty nifty trick.
darwin Posted - 10/12/2007 : 14:22:26
Ok, thanks Steve. I still can't see it, but I think there's now more hope.

But, doesn't the presence of her nipples make counter-clockwise impossible? Seriously.
awestruck Posted - 10/12/2007 : 14:11:17
Ok... I have tried and tried and I can't see the girl going counter clockwise.
Even after PixieSteve's help.

I asked mr awestruck for his opinion and he sees them both ways...in under 1 minute.

I looked at the cube and I see it going COUNTERclockwise. This is madness.

it's a more sophisticated necker cube... here's one that rotates, which you can also flip.

no. counter-clockwise requires her to be on her right foot, left arm extended, head cocked to the left.

both of these images use the same frame, but i've drawn the features in different ways to show to how it can be interpreted.

I am SO frustrated because I can't see her turning counter-clockwise.
Llamadance Posted - 10/12/2007 : 11:22:07
if I put them one above the other or side by side, they still both go the same way, clockwise.

Ok now this is weird; seeing the two above and below each other makes the top go clockwise and the bottom go anticlockwise. Quoi?

Clockwise or anti-clockwise?

I'd walk her everyday, into a shady place
lonely persuader Posted - 10/12/2007 : 09:30:44
Of course, there is no true direction. I hope people are only messin' about otherwise.

I mostly see it anti-clockwise, mostly.

but, the shadow is cast in my direction any way you look at it.
now that that's cleared, look at the shadow of the raised foot again, it's "drawing" an ellipse, i.e. moving up and from right to left - that's when it is further from our point of view (and further from her center of movement), and then on the left side moving down off the canvas when it is getting closer to our point of view.
now unless the pic is upside down and she's actually doing a headspin in a breakdance performance, that movement judging from the shadow her raised foot is casting is counter-clockwise. puh-eriod

touche. i had a good think and i agree. there's no an angle of light that could explain the shadows in a clockwise motion.

i removed the shadow.
