i just called to find out what the exact time is to set my clock and instead of hearing the friendly woman's voice who's been on there since i was a kid, it now another rude sounding automated voice saying "Effective Sept. 19, 2007, the time-announcement information service has been discontinued. We apologize for any inconvenience."

this is so fucked. how can they do this? what are people supposed to do who want to find out what time it is now? also, it's Time Lady! how can you fuck with a legend?

this is depressing.

here's an article about it: article about it

for you Californians, what did you imagine Time Lady looked like?

Time Lady has been gone for at least a year up here.

I could kill you sure, but I could only make you cry with these words...

So was the Time Lady married to Father Time?

Go great with Biscuit's skinny pants. Is that a chameleon in your pouch or are you just happy to see me?

They claim it was unintentional.

I like these examples better because they are intentional. I just wish I understood the whole thing. Good or evil?

The U.S. Naval Observatory's time service can be accessed by telephone or via the internet. The phone number is (719) 567-6742 in Colorado Springs, or (202) 762-1401 in Washington, DC. On the internet, USNO time service is available at http://tycho.usno.navy.mil/frontpage.html

The US Navy builds swastika-shaped barracks! I wouldn't give them the time of day and I wouldn't let them give me the time of day either!

NPR did an interesting story on the phone lady a few weeks ago. The said with cell phones people were not calling in like they used to. It was pretty cool ... it got into the history of all the different phone ladies over time.

We still have our time lady over here. Call her and do the maths.

Say what?? Now this is like finding out someone you already thought was dead was actually alive and just died.

I hadn't thought about the Time Lady since like 1985.

I remember often calling a local number that would give baseball scores, but that was when your only alternative was staying up and waiting for the local news to go through the scores.
coastline Posted - 09/27/2007 : 21:49:16
Going slightly off topic, I used to call the local library when I was a kid to listen to stories read to me over the phone. It was the greatest. But as a parent now, I think I'd feel kinda awful if my kids had to resort to calling a library's book-reading machine to hear stories.

Anyway, I think these phone things are dying out as a result of the Internets. They really don't make much sense anymore. They've got websites for all this stuff now -- time, weather, porn stories.

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

When I was a kid I tried calling that lady a couple times on New Year's Eve but the circuits were always busy. RIP Lady.

Back in the '70s there was also a line you could call for the local NWS weather forecast. I used to call it all the time when I was a kid. I wonder if that still exists.
