Posted - 09/08/2007 : 21:06:49 So my wife and I get about 4 calls a day about mortgages, car warranties, and "surveys". They all come around dinner time or about when the kids are about to fall asleep. I hate those bastards. I want revenge!
Usually it's obvious that it's junk (the pause after you pick the phone and say hi, the Indian accent on the other end, addressing me as Mr. X when X is my wife's last name, not mine) and I can hang up, but meanwhile I've dropped whatever I'm doing to pick up the phone. And if I let the machine pick up, I have to listen to Joe Fuckwad "return" my phone call about a mortgage. Any ideas of how to extract a little pain or waste from those fuckers? I've taken to saying I'll get my wife or whoever they ask for and then let them hang on the line (record so far is 4 min 50 sec). I've heard of people giving a sad story about the person they've asked for being dead or missing, but I don't think I can pull of the act and frankly I think even in India they've heard of that old trick. So, any other ideas? |

Posted - 09/12/2007 : 15:09:23 I have taken the phone into the bathroom with me before, and made sure to make as audible and disgusting farting/pooping noises as I can muster while grunting and carrying on a conversation with them. Usually they say, "we'll call you back," and that's the last I hear of them.

Posted - 09/11/2007 : 23:05:56 If you can pick up the line quick, many times you can hear all the background noise coming from the worksite. At that point I'll just hang up quietly when the spiel begins, or hang on and let them run out of breath before hanging up anyway. Ones that interrupt my breakfast routine get especially rough treatment....

Me, I usually just hang up on them after a couple of seconds of them offering me double glazing. Although it's not really double glazing these days, is it?

Hey, if my last name were X, I wouldn't want to change it when I got married either.

Posted - 09/09/2007 : 04:48:24 The U.S. government created a do-not-call registry a couple years ago: https://www.donotcall.gov/register/Reg.aspx. Say what you will about the gummint, but this seems to be an effective tool to prevent unwanted phone calls.
Also, we cancelled our land line four years ago, and now have only mobile phones. I've gotten exactly two spam calls in the last four years (they were both in Spanish, for whatever reason), which is a lot better than the tons we were getting with our land line.
Please pardon me, for these my wrongs. |

Posted - 09/09/2007 : 04:24:39 Yeah leaving them hanging is a good one, though it does mean you are engaged for a while. You could play some really offensive music quite loudly down the receiver.

Posted - 09/09/2007 : 02:19:16 This will get rid of most of them, except for the ones that pause for a long time, they are ignoring the disconnect signal.
My solution is to tell them that they have the wrong number, or that this is the Zx residence.
Remember that if it is a half-way legitimate company that the telemarketer is probably a minimum wage university student and that if you can spend the time, or leave the phone dangling, then they get paid and no one else is called.
As for email, it is my intention one day to have my own domain with unlimited email addresses so that I can have a separate account for each contact and can track which companies would sell my privacy. |
