Seriously. I am currently re-evaluating my "greatest bands of all time" list. This is rocking my world to its foundations. All I have to say is FUCK. This is GOOD.

I just bought:

Face to Face
Something Else
Village Green
Arthur
Muswell Hillbillies

Next up: Lola

From there I will probably explore early era Kinks, then tread lightly into the 70s/80s era stuff that is, shall we say, not so well regarded. I have listened to nothing but the above five albums for about 2-3 weeks now. God bless the Kinks.

Kinks songs ARE a blast to play on guitar. There are some great chord changes and they don't take too much range to sing, most of the time. Dave's are actually a bit more intense, ultimate rock anthems: "Strangers," "Mindless Child of Motherhood," "Party Line".

"Give The People What They Want" from the early 80's is the only latter day Kinks album I have and it has several good songs on it. "Better Days" is a wonderful, inspiring little tune.

Yeah, I love Victoria! Haven't heard that one in ages, though...

O.k., so due to this thread and my trust in Mike & Brian's good taste (not to mention Michael D has them a spot higher than the V.U.) I recently bought Face to Face. To quote speedy_m ,"FUCK".

Like any music that's extraordinary (frank) it took a day and a spin or two,...but my god, this is really good. Anyways, i'm really shitty at breaking down albums, drunk, online, so I won't. To make a long story a tad shorter, I just got Something Else and Village Green, and am head over heels... Really good stuff.

Sorry to ramble. See my work in the drunk thread.

I've been WAY into Muswell Hillbillies lately. "20th Century Man" may be in my top 5 Track 1, Side 1s.

I've seen Dave play a couple times in the last six years (both before his stroke). He's fantastic!

Shangri La is defintely my fave Kinks song. Beautifull arpegios, powerful riffs, nice chords progression, passion, three different parts, great lyrics..., perfect!

It's been four days I'm playing Kinks songs with my guitar, how awesome they are!

Shangri La, Victoria, Dead End Street, Days, Frank Black covers, Waterloo Sunset, Lazy Afternoon, Set Me Free, ...

It's as great as playing Frank Black songs.

Gosh, people, don't forget "Get Back in Line" from Lola Vs. Powerman and The Moneygoround. That's one of Davies most distraughtly beautiful numbers. I also feel "Oklahoma USA" from Muswell Hillbillies is an amazing piece both lyrically and musically.

At his best, I think Davies is far more significant lyrically than more heralded songwriters such as Lennon or Dylan in making statements about society, behavior, conditions of living, fashion etc. but it often comes in a much more subtle or sarcastic format and I don't think as many people can grasp it.

The inclusion of lots of harpsichord and music hall influence is a lot of fun, sometimes it works better than others. The hard rock can be hit or miss. They certainly had it down early on ("All Day and All of the Night," "Till the End of the Day")

I haven't listened to much of the 70's stuff after Muswell Hillbillies. Some of those songs appear on the BBC double disc I have. I do have the 80's record "Give the People What They Want" and it's actually pretty damn good, has a number of fine songs ("Better Things," "Art Lover," "Destroyer") I only got that recently and need to listen more.

sunny afternoon should be on the list,
sure it's been played to death, but it's a classic.

Face to Face and Something Else By The Kinks are two of the most overlooked album that I know off.

I really like that compilation. I think I've listened to 3 times this week. The only song I skip is #19. #18 strikes me as silly, but I find myself singing it.

5, 6, 12, and 16 are some of my favorites.
vilainde Posted - 08/23/2007 : 14:23:49
1. Victoria - from ARTHUR (OR THE DECLINE AND FALL OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE)
2. David Watts from SOMETHING ELSE BY THE KINKS
3. Stop Your Sobbing from various compilations
4. Alcohol from MUSWELL HILLBILLIES
5. Picture Book from THE KINKS ARE THE VILLAGE GREEN PRESERVATION SOCIETY
6. Supersonic Rocket Ship from EVERYBODY'S IN SHOW-BIZ
7. Til The End of the Day from THE KINK KONTROVERSY
8. Dedicated Follower of Fashion from various compilations
9. Autumn Almanac from various compilations
10. Better Things from GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT
11. Where Have All the Good Times Gone? from THE KINK KONTROVERSY
12. Lola from LOLA VS. THE POWERMAN AND THE MONEY-GO-ROUND PT. 1
13. Everybody’s Gonna Be Happy from various compilations
14. Starstruck THE KINKS ARE THE VILLAGE GREEN PRESERVATION SOCIETY
15. A Well Respected Man from various compilations
16. Have a Cuppa Tea from MUSWELL HILLBILLIES

18. Apeman from LOLA VS. THE POWERMAN AND THE MONEY-GO-ROUND PT. 1
19. Celluloid Heroes from EVERYBODY'S IN SHOW-BIZ
20. Waterloo Sunset from SOMETHING ELSE BY THE KINKS

I remember #4, 16 and 19 were less than great. The best were #1, 2, 6, 11, 12, 18 (also floop's favorite) and 20.

My daughter is called Victoria. I blame Brian for this.

That said, I can't say I love everything I've heard by the Kinks. On Brian's compilation some of the songs kinda got on my nerves.

Yes, I refuse to listen to anything not on that list. If I find a new band that I like, I have to shun one of the old bands on the list. It harsh, but that's how my father did it, and his father, and his father's father. So, I have no choice.

good stuff, darwin. is that pretty much the only kind of music you're into, then? not a bad list if so.

the lyrics to "20th century man"

This is the age of machinery,
A mechanical nightmare,
The wonderful world of technology,
Napalm hydrogen bombs biological warfare,

This is the twentieth century,
But too much aggravation
Its the age of insanity,
What has become of the green pleasant fields of jerusalem.

Aint got no ambition, Im just disillusioned
Im a twentieth century man but I dont wanna be here.
My mama said she cant understand me
She cant see my motivation
Just give me some security,
Im a paranoid schizoid product of the twentieth century.

You keep all your smart modern writers
Give me william shakespeare
You keep all your smart modern painters
Ill take rembrandt, titian, da vinci and gainsborough,

Girl we gotta get out of here
We gotta find a solution
Im a twentieth century man but I dont want to die here.

I was born in a welfare state
Ruled by bureaucracy
Controlled by civil servants
And people dressed in grey
Got no privacy got no liberty
Cos the twentieth century people
Took it all away from me.

Dont wanna get myself shot down
By some trigger happy policeman,
Gotta keep a hold on my sanity
Im a twentieth century man but I dont wanna die here.

My mama says she cant understand me
She cant see my motivation
Aint got no security,
Im a twentieth century man but I dont wanna be here.

This is the twentieth century
But too much aggravation
This is the edge of insanity
Im a twentieth century man but I dont wanna be here.

I'm not that hip, but here we go (sorry to hopefully briefly derail the Kink love). I like power pop and melodic punk, so (skipping Frank and Kim Deal groups):

X
Minutemen
Dead Milkmen
Nick Lowe
Devo
New Pornographers
Imperial Teen
Superchunk
Throwing Muses
REM
The Replacements
David Byrne
David Bowie
Willie Nelson
and Bebop Jazz (particularly Duke, Monk, and Dizzy)

Finally, the light bouncy sound of Supersonic Rocketship reminds me a little of a Ry Cooder album Bop Til You Drop.

And Sanjaya on American Idol doing "You Really Got Me" was horrificly embarassing on so many levels. :(

And Kinks aren't even a 60's band, they played untill the 90's right?

Picked up Kinks Kronicles cassette cause I wanted to hear the original "This Is Where I Belong" ( I like FB's better ), also wanted to hear "Days"- Elvis C. does it on Kojak Variety.

I didn't listen to the rest of it very much- Ok but nothing grabbed me.

You are a wise man, Mike. Those albums are the cornerstone of any good record collection. Ray Davies still puts on a captivating show too - i saw him in NYC right after his solo album came out in '06.
