Posted - 07/13/2007 : 11:40:07 I haven't been able to get the SEARCH thingy to work lately, so I hope I'm not repeating a topic. But has anyone seen this film? What did you think? I watched it last night.

Shortbus is awesome by the way. Particularly if you are a lonely writer with sexual frustrations.

Do you think there are many homophobes around here?
What kind of films would you then recommand to those people?
Do you think homophobes should have the same rights as normal people?

I guess they should have the right to watch NASCAR and pretend they are tough, manly men as long as they don't do it in front of me. |

Posted - 07/14/2007 : 15:39:32 I eagerly scooped this up when I saw it in the local record store because Cameron's name was attached. I was disappointed. It's no Hedwig. It had me wincing in a few parts but it was interesting though. To be frank I feel that it is basically a gay porno with enough straight sex to keep me watching and there's somewhat of a story line.
Caution, not for homophobes.
So, I own it but I'm not popping it in again any time soon. I have a couple of gay friends from work and it's heading their way when I see them again.
Kiss Me Guido is my faviorite gay themed movie. Hilarious! |

Posted - 07/13/2007 : 16:40:52 John Cameron Mitchell, writer/star/director of Hedwig and the Angry Itch, directed this movie SHORTBUS, which came out last year (very limited release). It was shot under the title THE SEX FILM EXPERIMENT. He cast basically unknown actors, and they all over the course of 2 years came up with the characters through workshop improvisation. These characters are driven and bound by a common arc: sex. We follow them through their relationships with each other...a sex therapist who can't orgasm and her husband who is suffering mentally with inadequecy over this, a gay couple in trouble due to one suffering from severe depression, a dominatrix who cant say her own name, and a voyeur. It is NOT so much a movie obsessed with sex as possibly possessed by the pressures of sex in todays society...the expectation, marketing, and ultimately the hush-hush shame that unjustly permeates sex in the U.S. culture. The gimmick, if you will, is that these actors ACTUALLY perform sex in this movie. And it's right up there with XXX films! There is penetration galore, sperm flying galore, a guy eats himself, etc. etc. HOWEVER, it's not presented as exploitative in any sense, and the erotic scenes are deftly rooted in reality...so the arousal factor while present, is more arousal of the intellect and psyche. At least that is how I percieved it. Somewhat groundbreaking, and definately controversial. It will be highly misunderstood and way down the line, I believe, a milestone the size of the Rock of Gibralter.

Posted - 07/13/2007 : 16:02:13 I watched it 'cause I was very touched by Hedwig and the Angry Inch. I found this one human and sensitive. Cameron managed to show harsh sex and situations in a very soft and clever way. I wasn't particularly fond of the actors. Some played in a cliché way imo. (maybe they were just very natural), but it has always been hard to picture homosexuals on the screen... (or anywhere else). I can't say that i am going to watch it again very soon, like a grand classic but it appealed to me by moments and made me wonder again about female orgasm...
Do you believe in this myth? Do you believe in women?
