Posted - 07/03/2007 : 13:31:09 That is the headline from the Los Angeles Daily News two days ago, about an important non-Frank-related matter.
Can we be frank here? By Tom Hoffarth, Sports Columnist
A summer of love wouldn't be complete without a wistful mention of these events that tried to break through into the sports pages this past week as legitimate news:
What's the story: A debilitating jaw injury has led to speculation that Takeru Kobayashi, the Babe Ruth of beef by-products, will not be able to defend his title at the Nathan's International Hot Dog Eating Contest on Wednesday, an event he has won every year since 2001 and set a finals record in last year with 533/4 3 / 4 wieners in 12 minutes.
"Right now, it's not so good," Kobayashi told the Chattanooga Times Free Press on Friday from New York.
Kobayashi's agent told The New York Times, that the champ continues to receive treatment for what's being called an "arthritic jaw."
U.S. hopeful Joey Chestnut, who established a world record with 591/2 1 / 2 dogs during a qualifier last month, said the 5-foot-5, 160-pound Kobayashi "could come to the Fourth of July with his jaw wired shut and I'm sure he could still do all right. He's that good of an eater."
What's the spin: An arthritic jaw? Is that as debilitating as Roger Clemens' fatigued groin?
These magicians of the munchies — call them the planet's best prestidi-gurgitators — would rather be stuck in a sausage straitjacket than miss this annual ESPN televised Super Bowl of Gluttony.
There was speculation that Kobayashi's ailment was psychosomatic, a reaction to Chestnut's new record. Or was this simply psychological warfare, to get Chestnut to ease up on his training?
"That's not even funny," Kobayashi said. "I don't even have time to think about that."
International Federation of Competitive Eating chairman George Shea said Kobayashi was listed as "day-to-day" with his ailment, but added: "It would shock me if Kobayashi, the champion that he is, were ducking a rematch with Chestnut."
And they say Vince McMahon is the only one who can script this kind of baloney.
