what's this 4 disc King of America?! i was excited about the demos on the KoA reissue because they included Are You Happy Now?, which is one of my favorites, but the demo was sort of boring.

I've only just recently started playing Elv again (a mix of acoustic demos and youtube rips). I've found the recent stuff a bit spotty. One of my favorite recent songs is off Secret, Profane... (check the links above) the album's great if you like rootsy Elvis. But by and large I'm not really playing the recent albums much. Momofuku harks back to eighties Elvis and Delivery Man nineties Elvis so they might be worth a go. The most recent poppy Elvis album I still enjoy start to finish is When I Was Cruel.

I wouldn't pass this up. We won tix to Elvis about 10 years ago and the show ended up being one of the most memorable we've seen (second only to Leonard Cohen). It was a smallish venue (2,000 seats, maybe), and toward the end, he put down his guitar, turned off the mic, stepped to the very front of the stage, and sang one or two songs a capella. That's when I realized he has one of the strongest, most pure voices around. Just stunning.

Another artist I never paid any attention to except when he came on the radio. ( I'm embarrassed to say) I've heard Oliver's Army. There is something in his voice that doesn't do it for me and that's the second silly thing i've said in this post so i'm gonna shut up now. |

Yep. That the tickets were free will be no consolation. Funny thing about Elvis, seems he's very easy to dislike. Another funny thing. Most of my women friends like him. Most of my male friends not. Maybe he encourages envy!

Jose Jones, I can't find my Trust CD, but reading your post made me want to hear "Different Finger" so I downloaded it- great song. That's always been one of my favorites.
Another of his country songs that I like is Bruce Springsteen's "Brilliant Disguise". I think it was a b-side from a Brutal Youth single and is on the re-issue of Kojak Variety.
By the way, the "13 Steps Lead Down" EP has three great b-sides "Puppet Girl", "Basement Kiss", & "We Despise You". It's worth buying if you see it somewhere.

Well, perhaps I'm biased, as this was the first EC effort I heard, and it blew my mind. Now, I love My Aim is True as well, but it really isn't the full-on mind-blower on first listen. EC and his music is like fine wine. He and it get better with age, whether it's the older songs sounding better as they stand the test of time, his new albums continuing to sound true at this later stage in his career, or just my appreciation for his greatness as I age.
I don't think I've heard anyone mention how good "The Delivery Man" was. Great album, released 2004. Notable songs, Delivery man, The Name of this thing is not Love, and Needle time, but most of all "Button My Lip". Just awesome.
Coincidentally, the Delivery Man tour was the last time I saw him live, at Austin City Limits Music Festival a few summers back, and he went on the day after the Pixies did. Both were great shows, but Elvis reminded me at that show (95°+ and he wore a purple suit, phew) just how much I appreciate his music as well as his charisma as a performer.
Anyway, I think from the other posters insistance that "Blood and Chocolate" is deemed as many people's favorite, I will have to go ahead and get it now... |

That’s really nicely written.
When I think of ‘left leaning’ I always think of one of EC’s contemporaries; Billy Bragg who for obvious reasons certainly wanted to grab nose rings (to borrow one of your phrases), but he had a very clear agenda in his songwriting I suppose. However, a lot of other ‘lefties’ were and are very obtuse such as David Byrne, Morrissey, Michael Stipe etc.

Oh yeah I remember. He was saying when he was younger he wrote songs with a lot of words in them and that meant they were generally bad songs, 'unless you're Elvis Costello or something'. This in reference to a supposed obliqueness in Pixies songwriting. You're right it was complimentary to Elvis. I'm glad he took up Elvisy lyric writing though, like with Sing for Joy or St Francis Dam Disaster. He's a better writer than Elvis IMO, which is saying a lot.
Lyric writing's like an act of faith almost, not least that your audience is gonna get it. So when FB sings 'Give me one little blip, and I'll totally flip', he says so much without needing to expand on it. Elvis, like most left-leaning artists, doesn't have quite that faith and ends up trying to grab them by the nose ring screaming. Elvis is always lauded as being 'England's greatest song-smith' and he rightly dismisses all that as hot air. He said a lot of his early writing was like 'party tricks'
It's interesting to point out the comparisons but coastline's right not to make too literal a connection. And like I said there's only so many avenues guys like that can take. Maybe a duet's not far off.

You know someone should be able to find an interview where we hear FB musing over if he's becoming or if he'd ever be likely to become Elvis Costello, I think I heard him say this in refrence to his changing musical patterns around Honeycomb, but it might have been eariler... anyone remember this sorta tossed-off comment? Was it "Ill never be Elvis Costello" or someting like "I woke and thought, oh my god I've turned into Elvis Costello?" If I recall correctly it was a complimentary (to Elvis) comparison, but I can't remember exactly the content of the thought..... |
