i was thinking about a northern england/southern scotland vacation this year and wondering about a few things, specifically driving times and/or bus fares for the following:
manchester to carlisle
carlisle to dumfries
dumfries to glasgow
carlisle to newcastle
also, how much does it cost to hire a car for 10 days?
if any of you brits would help out info that would be appreciated.

there are a few websites offering it for a small fee, but remember you are staying at their place too. and if anything went awry, well, you know where they live. i think we've missed the boat for this year anyways, we'll probably be looking at a cottage rental or something like that.

What's a home exchange? Is that where people literally swap homes for a period of time? Sounds trick to arrange, and rather trusting.

if we end up there, for sure! we haven't decided if we are flying to glasgow or manchester yet and we are trying to arrange a home exchange. we might fly in to one and out the other. my dad's cousin owns an inn in carlisle so we would like to visit there for a couple days. my wife has a friend in newcastle so she would like to go there. i need to do some birth record/family tree research stuff near glasgow. maybe we can rip up manchester one night whilst the wife plays in newcastle. i'll keep you posted.

manchester to carlisle - 2 to 2.5 hrs
carlisle to dumfries - hmm, not sure, not long, maybe an hour - 90mins
dumfries to glasgow - 90mins or so
carlisle to newcastle - again, not sure, maybe about an hour
all driving times. I've got a mate who comes from Dumfries, I'll ask him for better info on those times, but I think mine are ok. No idea about car hire....maybe £200 for 10 days. Check a car rental site.
