If I need to send a formal email and I know the dudes full name but not his title (ie could easily be Mr, Dr or even Prof) how do I start the email?

Idiot.

No they love it cos it means you think they're a consultant. They should all just get over themselves. Doctors, two notches below politicians and lawyers.

pretty sure that's the same here.

something that may or may not interest any of you: using a full stop after "Mr" or "Dr" or any similar contraction is actually incorrect. you only use them if the last letter of the contraction is not the last of the original word. e.g. prof.

Some do. I thought particularly in the UK they were particularly formal about that. And, here in the US you use Dear for everyone even though it seems odd to call a stranger Dear.

Google helps me none. I've met the guy, I'm going to go with mister I think rather than dear [insert full name]. If he isn't a PhD then I don't want to rub it in. Sounds weird.

I'm getting nervous about my interview now, fussing over little details. I tried calling him to start with but he's interviewing all day so bleh.

Idiot.

Just Mr [surname]?

No Dear?

I've gone with Mr. [surname]

Don't make me anxious about this people. I've got a lot to get ready and don't want to feel like I fell at the first hurdle. Stupid email.

Idiot.

Google him obviously, but if there's a good chance he has a PhD I would probably start with "Dear Dr. X,"

I doubt that using Mr as a default option would be considered a breach of etiquette, but are you in a position to give someone in his workplace a quick call, tell them you're preparing some correspondence for him, and ask them for his job title?
