according to that site, a single link could make $21 per month.
So, er, yeah, no advertising please :)
Saying that, if funds were needed for the site, how many of us would object to a month's advertising?

Posted - 04/21/2007 : 21:28:27 We have some contact with the new management, and yeah, Ken Goesing is a big change regardless. FB is still talking to us, at least we think, also.
And yeah, bandwidth costs usually fall under server costs. The less bandwidth, the less we need to pay for a server or requirements. Or if we exceed it. I'd like to have a downloads section again, but we'll have to have enough money to know that once we set it up we can keep it up. Plus, we'll have to work something out with Richard, the new guy.

Posted - 04/19/2007 : 04:27:37 it's pretty big to me, the end of an era Ken Goes is the only constant factor in FB career that I know of maybe Jean before there divorce. All the other people (Eric Drew Feldman, Joey Santiago for instance) pretty much come and go.

Yeah, just servers generally, and when we do mailouts for our podcast contests and little expenses like that.
Yeah, Ken Goes is no longer managing FB, they parted ways officially on Fri. 13th of this month.
"Now you're officially my woman. Kudos. I can't say I don't envy you."
I missed that, is this common knowledge on this forum? Any particular reasons about the split?

Posted - 04/17/2007 : 23:52:42 And bandwidth too, right? You had to shut down the downloads section for bandwidth reasons? I know there are other ways to share files, but it was nice when we had the FTP server to grab the rare stuff.
I think all new fans to FB.net should be able to get stuff like SSMVGD and the in-progress mix of Honeycomb, stuff like that without having to go looking very far.
Of course, if FB is no longer talking to us, and there's no contact with management, maybe we're all on our own now :(

Alright, I'll try to revamp it but I would feel bad doing that before getting everything back up and smooth (news updates, etc). Still, thanks for the comments and help, I DO like the idea of the hat more than a Friends' Club thing, although it was nice to get some prizes out to the people. Still, with Ken Goes gone I'm not sure where we'd get more to send out anyway.

Dean said above that the money is for servers and traffic costs. I'm sure that they could do other stuff if there was extra cash as well.

Posted - 04/15/2007 : 20:28:43 Oh yeah, see I didn't even know that the "Friend's Club" was there anymore. You need a more prominent button that is part of the header or something. I don't think it would be as intrusive/annoying as an ad, and it certainly wouldn't hurt the cause. I think that's the benefit of calling it "The Hat" - if you want to throw in, you can, if not, you don't have to and you don't have to feel guilty or anything.
Like coastline said, us people are lazy, and if we have to go a-looking for it, we forget.

Posted - 04/15/2007 : 05:16:18 Speaking just for myself here, but if there were an easy way to donate every once in awhile -- such as this Hat thing -- I'm sure I'd do it. I've heard the pitch on the podcast a few times, and I see Dean's occasional mentions about money, but I never feel like going out of my way to find a way to get the money where it needs to go. If I could drop a few bucks with a couple clicks, I'm certain I'd do that. It's a matter of ease -- my heart's there, but I'm a lazy SOB, so I need a little boost.

Posted - 04/15/2007 : 05:02:44 That's a good idea jefrey.
I don't see what's wrong with putting in a couple of ads for a month or so to see how it works, and then review after that time period. Maybe only put them in a couple of the forums instead of the whole lot. Don't know if that would be feasible.
And I think you should assume that silence on this issue means assent to advertising. :)

Posted - 04/15/2007 : 04:59:50 Yeah, we sort of have that already, although it's in the guise of the somewhat outdated Friends Club. Maybe it's time to revamp it?

Posted - 04/15/2007 : 03:03:54 Set up a "The Hat". It's just a PayPal link so people can donate when and if they can.
There's what, 4500 posting members on this forum? If everyone donated just $5, you'd be doing alright. Some of us can donate more, I'm sure. Hell, I bet even the Man and Jon Tiven would throw down a few bones. I bet there are few lurkers or secret posters here that have plenty of cash and love the site.
Just put in a 10 second blurb at the beginning of the podcast asking people to donate if they can, and I bet you'd get plenty to keep the site going.
See:

for an example.

Posted - 04/15/2007 : 00:04:47 Yeah, I've often thought of ways to try to generate site revenue that were unintrusive and still a service to you guys. So far all I've come up with is my Amazon-store tie in and the links to eMusic, Napster, iTunes, etc. in the Discopedia and in news posts. When you guys sign up for those services through us we get some money back. Still, our funds are just about at zero after paying for the podcast server for another year, so this is actually a very real discussion I'm glad you've started.

Posted - 04/11/2007 : 10:12:11 Is there any money in being one of those eBay clearing houses? It could actually be useful to have a page of FB related auctions.
I wouldn't mind if the ads were for music stores, Cooking Vinyl must have made a lot of money from us all. COF could have had a "Buy It Here!" or even a "Buy it now!" button in his post. I am sure such labels spend oodles of cash trying to usher people to their sites.
Is it generally money for each redirected visitor? If you could have some automation lackey scan posts for the name of albums available at, let's say Amazon, and add a hyper-text with a little note when you hovered like "You can purchase TOTY on Amazon.com for $9.98", that would not be terribly intrusive and could be mutually beneficial. I've seen a site with an automated process, every word ends up with a link, it's not pretty.
