Soo, what do people think of the new album? I'm a little disappointed. Was really looking forward to it, but hasn't done much for me so far. My favourite bit so far is Parting Of The Sensory, especially the ending, it's great. Nothing else has really grabbed me. And I *did* like Good News For People Who Like Bad News...

I must say that I wasn't that impressed with them at Primavera. The crowd mainly seemed to dig it, but it was no more than OK for me.

Personally, I didn't even notice Marr on We Were Dead. I haven't listened to it much, but the only songs that stand out for me are March Into the Sea, Dashboard, and Fly Trapped in a Jar.
Two drummers? Did they have that on the album, too? I must be stupid, cause I didn't notice that either.

Johnny Marr is so damn cool. He doesn't look all that different than he did 20 years ago. But why does Modest Mouse have two drummers. They were playing pretty much the same thing on Letterman.

I have since listened to the cd and love it. MM is now getting ready to preform on Letterman in case there is anyone else out there interested in checking them out. I can't wait... I get to finally see what Johnny Marr looks like in person.

I'm a fan of their whole career, and I think the album's very good. I was very unsure of what I thought of it at first, because I was reasonably disappointed by Good News. I listened to the album a little more (ok, a lot more), and I've come to the conclusion that it rocks enough for me to drive 8 hours to see them.

I disagree with those that say that Marr hasn't affected the sound. Isaac is still front and center as far as song structure, but some songs you can hardly hear his guitar, with Marr right up in your ear. There are a few sleepers, but the album is very cohesive, which IMO Good News lacked.
For me, it was a matter of letting go of the wacky idea that somehow Isaac owed it to me personally to play "Modest Mouse songs," and just appreciating that as a human and an artist, he's evolving, maturing, and still searching for his sound.
It's hard to grow older and it's hard to let go, indeed.

Spitting Venom
Steam Engenius
People as Places as People (they should make this into a video and have Isaac doing the David-Byrne-cuts-his-arm thing)
Anyway, I love it. It doesn't keep me from listening to The Moon and Antarctica, Lonesome, Long Drive, or Build Nothing out of Something, so I've decided to quit comparing. |

I agree that lonesome crowded west is there best....I have been a big modest mouse fan for awhile, so i went through the uneasy phase of them getting popular with good news like I'm sure the rest of the long time fans did...
I also was a little lukewarm to the new cd, but it is getting a little better with more listens...has no chance of cracking their top 4 cd's though...
1. lonesome crowded west
2. moon and antarctica
3. building nothing out of something
4. long drive...
not sure what I would put 5th, as those 4 are way ahead of their last two.. |

I like the We were dead before the ship even sank. The first few listens I was a little dissappointed but, the more I listen to it the more I like it. I think the opening track "March On" is great. It makes me want to punch someone in the leg everytime I listen to it.I think it is a solid album. My favorite album still is A lonsome crowded west. |

I think it's a nice follow up to the last album. I don't think it is as immediate, but once it all clicks it's a great album. |

i love it. "fly trapped in a jar" is my favorite, but i think the whole thing is really solid.

I put it in the rotation for a few days and then took it out...can't seem to get enough of the shins, the decemberists and tapes 'n tapes at the moment....I hope it grabs a hold of me soon enough. |

Well, Mr. Brock openly admits to stealing from those bands I mentioned, I'm not really dogging Modest Mouse, I just think others have done it better.

Fuck that band, just listen to the Pixies' "Surfer Rosa," Pavement's "Crooked Rain Crooked Rain," and the Flaming Lips' "Clouds Taste Metallic" all at once and you'll hear something similar sounding but way better.
