i'll be in calgary over the long week-end (thursday-sunday). i'm reffing a hockey tournament during the days and have my nights free. are there any forum members who have spent any time there who can suggest any good venues, clubs, pubs etc. i'm staying at the sheraton suites eau claire - doesn't look far from electric ave???

Megatunes has decent selection but high pricing, as I recall. Same story with the one in Edmonton.

Nothing is ever something.

Sorry, that link to the D'Angelico doesn't work and can't be fixed because it has an apostrophe which gets translated to percent 20.

I found an old business card that I have from a record shop, I think this is the one, Megatunes, 101, 932-17th Avenue S.W., and now megatunes.com. Is it still worth going there?

The Irish place definitely wasn't Ceili's. I would have remembered that because I used to live a stone's throw from the one in Edmonton.

As for The Constantines, I've never seen them live, but have heard rapturous stories about their shows from LOTS of people. I've got a couple of their albums and can't wait to see them this week.

No idea about a record shop in the warehouse district, I've been to five or six in town and they all disappointed. Would love to know where that guitar shop is.

Nothing is ever something.

I heard a comedian the other day talking about the Calgary Tower, he said something like, "Generally when you put up an observation tower you want to make it taller than the buildings around it."

Many years ago there was a completely wonderful record store, I remember it was in the warehouse district and you had to pass under the railway to get there. Any idea what store that may have been?

Calgary is also the only place where I've actually been able to hear a guitar made by John D'Angelico. It was a Style A, it was hanging on the wall of this very small vintage guitar store. I strummed it, it sounded like angels in harmony.

Also, when you're in Calgary you're only an hour and a half from Banff. If you can sneak away one night and stay at the Banff Springs Hotel???

sweet, i like book shops. i don't think i'll have a lot of "shopping" time but i've been told to check out 17th ave. for the cool shops.

is that irish pub ceili's? there is one in vancouver i haven't been to yet but they apparently started out in calgary (there is two of them) and now have them in edmonton and here. i was thinking of bringing my kilt....

i haven't heard the constantines (unless i saw them live once, the name rings a bell) maybe i'll check them out.

any idea how much a cab will cost from the airport to downtown?

Also, post back here if you find a good record shop. I was there a few weeks ago and came out of it with no sweet music.

Do not go to Roughnecks or Cowboys. There's a sweet Irish-style pub on 3rd Street, can't remember what it's called but it's in the basement of some office building. Good beer selection, and the crowd was pretty welcoming to an out-of-towner.

Oh, I just remembered Calgary actually has my favourite used book store. Fair's Fair, it's on the corner of 14 Street and 17 Avenue SW. If you just want to unwind for a couple hours, they're happy to have people sit around and read. Amazing selection for a used shop.

Nothing is ever something.

The Constantines are playing there both Saturday and Sunday, they're one of the better live bands in the land...if I'm not going to a show, I'm not having much of a time in Calgary. Just not my kind of place.

Nothing is ever something.
