Posted - 03/23/2007 : 08:48:33 ...is officially fantastic. Downloaded it this morning, I'd say it's definately their best, even better than their legendary You're Living All Over Me. It's hard not to love J. Mascis' insane guitar skills, and his voice has gotten better with age. They're still the same band and haven't lost any of their sound, it's just more refined, the solos are even better and the songwriting has improved too. I'll definately be buying this one on CD. I hope this topic hasn't been covered (the search function doesn't seem to work for me), but if you like Dino Jr. seek out this album, it's really great. |

Posted - 08/15/2007 : 18:38:52 I love Djr, and Beyond is possibly my favourite of their albums, but none of their original songs do it for me as much as the best covers, especially Richard Thompson's I Misunderstood & Neil Young's Lotta Love. Take A Run At The Sun is great too. Anyone heard about any cover album plans? J apparently told one of my pals in Japan he'd like to record one. |

Lo-fi rockers fight sound and apathy Patrick Donovan, Reviewer July 16, 2007
It seems no band actually breaks up any more, they just have a hiatus. The latest in a long line of influential rock bands to reform and tour Australia is Dinosaur Jr, whose electrifying lo-fi rock'n'roll was as influential on the grunge movement as the soft-loud dynamics of the Pixies.
Unlike the Pixies, who played one of the gigs of the year at the Northcote Social Club in March, the original Dino line-up had been here before. But this time, they had a decent new album to spruik, and were probably being paid a lot less than the Pixies.
Which suggests Dinosaur Jr were doing it for the right reasons. But you wouldn't know it from Thursday's show. The band seemed largely uninterested, and from the opening song off the new album, Almost Ready, frontman J. Mascis mumbled his way through songs, his words lost in an ear-splitting hurricane of distorted guitars. He seemed more interested in wild guitar solos than songs, but his best playing, which fell somewhere between the wigged-out guitar work of Jimi Hendrix and Parliament's Eddie Hazel, provided the only transcendent moments of the night.
The sound exploding out of the ancient PA system was appalling for the first half of the show, and it reminded us that noisy garage bands are much better suited to compact venues than the Forum's high ceiling. The Palace is already being missed.
The big question was always going to be whether they would only play songs from the band's first two albums, which were written by original members J. Mascis, bassist Lou Barlow and drummer Murf. Despite never quite matching the original line-up's chemistry, Mascis went on to write some excellent songs with new members, and two of those, a punked-up version of Out There and the empathetic anthem Feel the Pain, were highlights. If Barlow felt the pain, he didn't show it.
The sound had improved by the time they reeled off The Wagon and Freak Scene and they were just getting in a groove with a massive Monster Magnet-esque jam when the show ended. |

I've gotten 4 tracks from itunes (Pick Me Up, Almost Ready, We're Not Alone, and Feel the Pain) and I like every one of them. I plan to pick up the new CD as soon as possible.
Thanks, guys, for turning me on to some new music!!

Influential band returns to Blind Pig with original lineup
Thursday, May 31, 2007
BY KEVIN RANSOM News Special Writer
Everyone knows that dinosaurs are extinct, right?
Well, not quite all of them. Because the original lineup of the seminal indie-grunge-rock band Dinosaur Jr has not only come back from the dead - the guys have also recorded their first album together in almost 20 years.
For those who remember the band's late-1980s glory years - when Dinosaur Jr was just as influential as the Pixies in terms of creating the soft-loud dynamic that would rule alternative-rock in the '90s - this development probably seemed about as likely as Tyrannosaurus Rex coming back from extinction and lumbering down State Street.
That's because the key members - guitarist J Mascis and bassist Lou Barlow - had developed an acrimonious relationship dating as far back as the mid-'80s, not long after forming. The bad blood finally reached a boiling point in 1989 when Mascis told Barlow he was breaking up the band - and then reformed it shortly after with a new bass player.
Barlow went on to form the critical-darling indie bands Sebadoh and Folk Implosion, while Dinosaur Jr - which comes to the Blind Pig on Sunday and Monday - soldiered on for a few years without Barlow. But the dynamic just wasn't the same, and the band's rep lost some of its luster. Finally, in '97, Mascis put the band on hiatus and focused on his solo career.
But in 2005, the unthinkable happened. Mascis and Barlow surprisingly buried the hatchet and put the band back together, with original drummer Murph - one name only, thank you - but only for the purposes of doing some live shows. Barlow dismissed the notion of making a new record as "ridiculous.''
But a handful of shows led to a tour, which stopped at the Blind Pig. Eventually, with much prodding from their manager, the pair decided that, if they were going to continue touring, it would probably be best to have some new material at the ready.
The resulting CD, "Beyond,'' was released May 1, and the disc does not disappoint longtime Dino-heads. Much of the music splits the difference between Mascis' signature contribution - his serrated, over-amped, Neil Young-style guitar thrash - and the fractured lo-fi shamble that Barlow perfected with Sebadoh. And on occasion, Murph's percussive whomping brings out the power-trio capabilities that always lurked in Dinosaur Jr's music.
"In a lot of ways, J is just bringing the sound he's been developing over the years - this really textured, heavy rock guitar,'' Barlow recently told Billboard magazine. "It's extraordinarily dynamic.''
Jason Berry, who books bands for the Pig, said that Dinosaur Jr has "a really strong Ann Arbor connection. A lot of guys from the older punk bands from around here, who influenced Dinosaur Jr, will show up at their shows and jump up on stage - like Ron Asheton from the Stooges. In fact, one time, after the gig, they all went over to Ron's house and recorded some things.
"I wasn't into Dinosaur Jr at first, but after hearing them at sound checks a few times, I really came to appreciate how great a guitarist J is,'' Berry said. "Now, everyone on the staff here is a huge fan.'' |

Posted - 05/22/2007 : 15:21:34 It's certainly a good offering by a great band, but I'd have to agree with those who say it's not in the same league as 'Your living all over me', which for me is one of the all time greats. Still, it's great to have a new Jr. album with Mascis and Barlow back together and sounding great. |

after many listens, i still love that album. there is nothing special about it, nor is there a killer song, but to me it sounds so right. for me it works like green mind - a collection of really good songs which fit very well together (although green mind is my #1 dino album). currently i like "crumble" a lot - it has a typical mascis/dino moment, when the song becomes calm, a new rhytm guitar with a remote sound comes in and then a short solo starts - great.

DINOSAUR JR ANNOUNCE LONDON SHOW Dinosaur Jr
The trio play their first UK gig of the year
Dinosaur Jr have announced that they will play their first show of 2007 at London's Scala on June 26.
More headline dates and European festival appearances are expected to be announced soon.
The band this week released new studio album "Beyond" - their first in 18 years to feature Dinosaur's original line-up of J. Mascis, Lou Barlow and Murph, has received raptuos reviews from all.
The group reunited in 2005, after tentative shows to promote their back catalogue re-issues went phenomenally well, and they decided to try and attempt an album.
Mascis also played an intimate solo show for competition winners at London's Metro club in February.
Tickets for the Scala show are on sale now, priced £16.50. Show starts at 7.30pm.

i would not say that i think it is their "best" album, but maybe it will grow to be my favourite album. there is the usual melancholy and remoteness i like so much, but a very positive feeling to. "peace with the world" is the phrase that comes to my mind.
