I recently played a friend the new tracks from "Christmass" as an intro to Frank. He dug it, thought it was unique. We went to the mall one day, where I mentioned in an earlier post I had seen a used copy of "Teenager..." for 6 bucks, and I showed it to him, and told him he should buy it. A few weeks later, he did. He just got finished listening to it and it seemed to me, he was mindfucked, to say the least. But in a good way. He says he's gotta give it a few more spins to really get it, and I think he will.
Now for the real test...introducing him to The Catholics. ;)
It takes a lot of work, but people can be enlightened.
Rock On, Chris.

I've learnt not to bother sharing the music of Frank with friends. When I've tried, it's a case of "White Men Can't Jump". I mean, they 'listen to' Jimi Hendrix but don't 'hear' him.
I know what you mean but then again I might never have gone to see Pixies for the first time back in 88 if I hadn't played the two Purple Tape demos to a friend and convinced him to come. Friends should stay young forever.

I managed to get my Uncle to listen to him a bit too, I don't think it's that hard to convert people who like good music, it's just trying to convert idiots who listen to the chart music or shitty heavy metal that's a problem.

Posted - 06/12/2007 : 09:32:06 I don't really bother anymore. Most times I've tried the reactions have ranged from indifference, bemusement, total dismissal and once even laughter. I think you either get it or you don't and most don't. Oh well. |

I’ve been given music as a gift by friends etc on the mistaken assumption that I would like it as well and it they end being played once and then forgotten about or sold.
P.S - Anyone want some ever so slightly used Alanis Morissette / Oasis CD’s ?

My friend awestruck just took right to Frank's music. Faster than I did.

I let her borrow a brand new copy of Surfer Rosa (still in plastic) and two large mix CDs. I bet she'll like them!
I wonder if I'll ever see my CDs again!

This means she has a Bowie's greatest hits CD.
I always have trouble converting people to Frank. I sorta gave up. People listen and say "wow, how weird!" and nod that they like it, but usually that's the end of that. I personally think you have to have a little OCD, a few neurosis, and a dash of eccentricity to really appreciate Frank.

She was in town visiting a friend and she'll be leaving tomorrow. I don't have my CDs back yet but it'll be worth it if I can turn someone on to Frank Black / Pixies

Posted - 06/09/2007 : 13:52:19 Tried it. Failed. Might have another go. No wait, a comp CD I did for another friend prompted him to buy a ticket for the upcoming London show. That counts right? Not sure he'll really get into FB cos he's very much in a 60s groove (the comp CD I made for him had all of FB's 60s-ish songs on it).
Didn't we have a comp tape thread that was kind of similar to this?

Posted - 06/08/2007 : 17:44:07 It always puzzles me how some people are not able to hear the beauty of it all.
BUT - I must admit - and I'm ashamed to say it - but the first time I heard TOTY (when it first came out) I greeted it with a big blank stare. It was set aside and collected dust. Then, a year or two later it lept out at me and completely grabbed me by the boo boo. I've been addicted to all things Frank ever since. But I often look back and wonder "what the hell was going through my mind that first time I heard TOTY?!"
I wasn't ready for it in some way. The two opening tracks were so far out of left field it was just too much for my mind to comprehend at the time.
but once I got it I GOT IT big time. And so I always remember this when trying to make new converts. I don't think so much about trying to win them over with specific tracks as much as exposing them to the overall feel. They'll get it in time.
Kind of like when I woke up one day and out of the clear blue yonder for no reason at all I was craving sushi (and I'd only had it once before). If you keep exposing them to it - one day these people are going to wake up and crave some Frank!!

Posted - 03/13/2007 : 18:57:55 Not married yet, but might as well be. Sorry couldn't help.
Anyway, since my good friend converted me, I am all for exposing friends to FB music. My significant other isn't quite into FB, but there is hope. Oh and i do have another friend that i have mentioned FB to and she has never heard of him or the Pixies, but she is interested. FB is too good to keep to oneself. Gotta share. |

Posted - 03/13/2007 : 16:52:11 I haven't tried the Pixies...yet. But I figure if I can get him to like Frank, I can get him to like anything. :) He's a smart kid and has good taste in music. That's why I figured it would be a safe bet making him aware of Frank.
