Here's another arrogant list of the most essential, or definitive, or best, or whatever albums of all-time, this time decided by the U.S. National Association of Recording Merchandisers.

There are so many problems with this list, it's hard to begin. Jewel, Janet Jackson and Faith Hill are on there, and Shania Twain even landed at #21. But no Pixies. The "Forrest Gump" soundtrack made it, but the Pixies didn't. Avril freaking Lavigne, but no Pixies! Kenny G! Bon Jovi! Argh.

Below is the list, which came out this week, and here's a link to the organization's website about it: www.definitive200.com/index.html

Are they just going by sales figures to make that list? At any rate, this shit never ceases to crack me up. Alanis Morrissette, Grateful Dead and Faith Hill? Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

If you ever have a chance to hear the original version of the Beach Boys' Smile(y Smile)do it. It is absolutely amazing.

I got the new Brian Wilson rerecording of Smile, and really liked it, but only listened to it about 5 or 6 times and put it away. I haven't heard the original "Smile" - it takes some effort to get all the piece and put it together, doesn't it? I'd be interested to hear it.

I guess I just don't "get it" on Pet Sounds and Village Green. On the other hand, I "get" that Pink Floyd is totally genius, I just don't enjoy it. With Pet Sounds, I just feel like it's totally overrated.

Where's "Crooked Rain Crooked Rain" by Pavement, or "Bee Thousand" by Guided By Voices?
Good question, TarTar. They'll both be listed in the top 20 on any Pitchfork Media list.

Am I the only person in the world that doesn't "get" Pet Sounds? I've tried to listen to it about 20 times, and I'm so thoroughly bored it's like pulling teeth. And I really love the Beach Boys. I just can't stand Pet Sounds. Especially when it gets compared to Sgt. Peppers (which I agree is not the Beatles best, it's just the one that really grabs your attention as something different - plus they have those ridiculous costumes!). Whenever I try to listen to Pet Sounds, I think, "I'd really rather be listening to Sgt. Peppers."

Same thing with the Kinks "Green Village Preservation Society" - it's so lauded, but 75% of the album bores me to hell. Did you have to "be there" when it came out to get it? There are songs on both albums that I love, but as a whole, I can't stand them.

No comment on the rest of the crappy lists. Well, except that they are crap.

What is wrong with people? Radios have to have cryptic messages or something. People who only listen to what is played on the radio are just so sadly being misled. I know. I was one of those sad sad people. Thankfully, no more. Thank you FB and the Pixies!

I'm always annoyed with Sgt. Pepper being considered the milestone achievement of The Beatles. I understand it broke a lot of ground for both the band and popular music, but I don't think it's their best songwriting, and certainly doesn't rock that much. I think Rubber Soul, The White Album and Abbey Road have far more to offer in the song department and even creativity and diversity.

I also don't trust any list that doesn't have Dre's The Chronic in the Top 25! Sure, 30 ain't bad, but he was beat by The Wall!

These lists seem compiled by a VH1 watcher who also tunes into the classic rock station. They obviously don't know their Pink Floyd. Just put all the obvious popular records in there, never sift and listen to all the gems lying outside the radio. Where's "Crooked Rain Crooked Rain" by Pavement, or "Bee Thousand" by Guided By Voices. The Replacements "Tim" or "Let It Be"? Immortal Tehcnique's "Revolutionary Vol. 2"?

Actually, VH1 has better lists than this, come to think of it.

Note to Darwin: They DID acknowledge Coltrane's "Love Supreme" (#78)! They still must die!

I was going to go off on a rant about Shania Twain at 21, but then I read your message and saw you had already done that. Instead I'll point out that there are only 2 jazz albums on the whole list and they're the standard ones on every list (Kind of Blue and Out of Time). Duke Ellington and his boys should rise from their graves and smite the motherfuckers that made this list.

Frank Black's ok and everything, but this list is right: Boyz II Men are far more "essential" than Frank Black. Barf.

I'd rather slam my nuts in a door than have to listen to Jay Z, Tupac, Kid Rock, and the Grease Soundtrack.
Oh, and Titanic Soundtrack?...Titanic Soundtrack?

Good to see Ziggy Stardust and Aja--althought they are WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too far down on the list
