I'm a bit bored so I thought i'd start this topic - don't know if it's been covered before.
Best ending to a song I've ever heard (I'm sure people will have a different opinion) is 'Light Aircraft On Fire' by The Auteurs. It's a wonderful, unexpected power chord at the last second of the song - thrills me every time I hear it. |

Hey Jude is one obvious example, although it's an outro rather than the very end of the song (which of course just fades out). Can't think of an overall favorite right now! |

"A Day In the Life" - the Beatles
Orchestra buildup (played live in studio, just winging it, and then...) Bonggggggggg! Like someone dropped a hammer on piano. Come on, most iconic ending ever!

"No Mean City" by NAZARETH, from their 1979 album of the same name. The song is loud, rude, and aggresive, and the ending is dark, moody, yet slightly soothing, with cascading guitar feedback, the final loud cymbal crashes fading into the black, and a lone, haunting guitar arpeggio. If the end of that song was the last thing I ever heard, I would die a happy man. Yeah, it's that good.
For those who haven't heard the song, think the outro to "So. Bay", but a lot darker.

off the top of my head... the end to Motorway To Roswell, all of it really, the epic sound of the end then just the piano...

my favs:
my father my king by mogwai...ending a song with 5 minutes of pure noise/guitar feedback is a brilliant idea.
volcano by old man gloom...a very heavy prog-metal tune which teases you throughout its 7 minute length to then ends immediately after it's just hit and one and only crescendo.

Two more:
'Milk and Honey' by Beck, love the hypnotic and dreamy final section (not a million miles away from 'Los Angeles').
'Edinburgh Man' by The Fall. Pretty straight (for them) homage to the great city until it fades out with what sounds like a completely different song. They always pull the rug from under your feet. |

"Think For Yourself" and "Savoy Truffle" by The Beatles come to mind because they are both penned by George Harrison and have identical endings (as well as much of the phrasing and feel of the song throughout). Gets me a good laugh!
The ending of "Only in Dreams" by Weezer... the entire build-up section to the climax, and then into the denouement with the bass guitar playing that rather wicked/ultimate bassline and then resolves on the G to end the song... just a lonely bass note landing on the root note after this ridiculoulsy intense number. Very cool.
I'm always a fan of songs that have endings which stray from anything that's been done previously in the song, like the ending of "It Won't Be Long" by The Beatles.

Against the '70s by Mike Watt from the "Ball-Hog or Tugboat?" album. The first time I heard the end it really threw me for a loop: after belting out the wonderful line, "the kids of today should defend themselves against the '70s," over and over, it fades out to pretty much dead silence. However, it then fades back in to full volume and right in the midst of the line it stops and the next song immediately starts.

What's that Cure song with a scream at the end? Is it called the Subway Song or something? It's very quiet at the end, and then suddenly there's a scream that makes me poop my pants every single time. I don't know if it's my favorite song ending ever, but it sure stands out for me.
