Posted - 03/05/2007 : 04:03:14 Hello women and men of frankblack.net!
I'm writing my master thesis this summer and the research I'm doing concerns the construction of the musicgenre Lo-Fi. I'm reading all the issues of some musicmagazines from Oor (Holland), NME (UK) and RollingStone (US) from 1991-1994, just to see how the Lo-Fi genre was concieved in these leading musicmagazines. But I also want to read some underground/independent magazines from that era, just to see if there is any difference (my guess is I will find some differences). Do you have any suggestions which indie-zines I could read?

Posted - 03/07/2007 : 09:19:52 Have tried searching for old articles about some of the "gradfathers" of the lo-fi movement (ie. Guided By Voices, Sebadoh, Pavement, etc)?
maybe I'll kick it

Posted - 03/07/2007 : 08:56:29 that's one nice idea...it's easy. Well, a lot of people think lo-firecordings to hard to listen to. But I'm in the camp of Lo-Fi-easy-likers.

Posted - 03/06/2007 : 18:31:47 I don't know zines and I barely know lo-fi but whenever I think about it I go back to the Abstract Plain's major diversion onto this topic, largely courtesy of our own anazgnos, and I remember one of James Barnard's contributions: "I like lo-fi: it's easy." And, if I may, easy is often right and good.

Posted - 03/06/2007 : 02:33:38 although not from that era, 'comes with a smile' covered a good few lo fi acts during it's eight year stretch (1998-2006, I think).

Posted - 03/06/2007 : 00:44:51 very interesting daisy, but I would have to get hold on all the issues from said years. For local zines that would be extremely hard to do here in the Netherlands. But hey, in this internet-era you can get everything...

Posted - 03/05/2007 : 19:16:47 I don't know if this helps, but it would be interesting to see what local 'zines or mags had in there coverage at the time. I don't know if Seattle has a local mag but that might be worth looking into. Good luck with your thesis! Thanks for keeping us posted. |
