New Music: The Comas: "Red Microphones" [MP3]
An underrated gem about getting high and watching your ex on TV, the Comas' 2004 Conductor sounded expansively psychedelic, even if it never left the room, got off the couch, or even changed the channel from Dawson's Creek reruns. "Red Microphones" (from their forthcoming Vagrant debut Spells) finds frontman Andy Herod shaking it off and getting out of the house, even if it's just to roll the 12-sided die: "We grind the bones of liar giants and drink the blood of maidens swooning," he sings. "We thrust our swords to heaven."
But this isn't exactly Trail of Dead territory. "Red Microphones" leaves behind the heaviness and moodiness of Conductor for a major-key playfulness that's endearingly goofy in its mock-epic scope. A bouncy fuzz guitar churns pop momentum, the chorus is all crash cymbal, and synth bloops and bleeps pepper the verses. Listen carefully for the monster roaring "Yar!" on the intro and bridge-- it's both a battle cry and an encore request.
You may now go about your business.
