My Bloody Valentine set to record again
Kevin Shields: 'I will make another great record'
My Bloody Valentine are set to make another album, according to leader Kevin Shields.
The band's last LP was 1991's 'Loveless', while Shields' also contributed new tracks to the Sofia Coppola-directed 'Lost In Translation' soundtrack in 2004. He also remixed Bow Wow Wow for 'Marie Antoinette''s soundtrack by the same director.
However, recently discussing the possibility of a third 'proper' My Bloody Valentine album, Shields said the prospects looked very positive.
"I do feel that I will make another great record," he explained. "We are 100 per cent going to make another My Bloody Valentine record unless we die or something."
Talking to Magnet magazine, Shields added that the delay so far had been down to a lack of inspiration.
"A lot of people say the reason My Bloody Valentine didn't make another record is because we couldn't," he noted. "That's mostly true, but not because we couldn't make another record, but because I never could be bothered to make another record unless I was excited by it. And just by fate or whatever, that never happened.
"I'd feel really bad if I didn't make another record. Like, 'Shit, people only got the first two chapters, but the last bit is the best bit'."
However the star admitted he was not sure when a new album would appear, explaining: "How long will that take to transpire into an actual physical record? I don't know."

I like it. It's as bloody good as any of these plagiarist bands that are around these days. It's not over the top, good production and structure. I'd buy a copy if I had two pennies to rub together.

And that's my point, it wouldn't really surprise anyone.
I think most critics and fans just can't bring themselves to believe that a new Pixies album is under any risk of being bad. Frank has always been extremely competent, he wouldn't let the ball drop in a highly anticipated new Pixies album. He knows just how many eyeballs (and eardrums) will be on him if/when that happens.
Most people were less than confident that Kevin Shields could really make a great album again. The combination of an epic album with all the seemingless neverending postponing that followed it put a dent to his credibility, so his current triumph is amplified by this surprise factor. Hence all the repercussion.
But yes, a new (certainly good) Pixies album would be a major topic in the musical press for months. There is absolutely no way it wouldn't be.

I think the great difference between MBV and the Pixies is the surprise factor.
I am loving the new MBV album. Surely not as brilliant as Loveless, but I hadn't felt this happy about music since FB's Bluefinger.

i think it's because MBV never really broke up. they never hung it up.
the pixies are a thing of the past, and a new album is like bringing back a beloved dead pet. there's a very valid fear that it's not going to be "the same."
though so many people shit on the last 2 pixies albums, so they'll be disappointed anyway.

I'm not sure if it was a question or a statement myself, actually. I agree with you that it's difficult to hope for the level of praise and good press for a new Pixies album as there has been for the new MBV. But not because I don't believe FB can come up with a great set of songs. For me, it's hard to see a new Pixies album getting as much praise, even if a new Pixies release was the better album. It seems easier for MBV to get away with a (good or bad) new release than the Pixies and that's what I don't get.
I don't know if it's a question of the type of sound of the two bands or what people expect them to sound like two decades later? Or just a question of good will toward each band, that the Pixies seem to have squandered over the years with the reunion tours?
Still have to check out that Yo La Tengo album. Have been hearing great things about that one. |

Basically I can't see the press lavishing as much praise upon a new Pixies release as they have been doing to the new MBV album. I'd put it down to unrealistic expectations - no doubt Pitchfork etc. would cream themselves if it was a replica of Surfer Rosa or Trompe or whatever, but I can't foresee a new release being like that.
Comparing the two out of the loose connection of fitting into the alternative rock band category and reuniting.

I'm not the biggest MBV fan, but the new album is pretty cool, even if I don't think it's a mind-blowing masterpiece.
Why does a new Pixies album seem to have to be mind-blowing just to be considered acceptable?

Not that anyone's bothered, but Carcass apparently have a new album on the way, their first new studio release in 17 years. Wasn't too bothered with there last two, keen to hear this though. |
