So I was watching Clerks II yesterday and now I can't stop listening to "Nothing But Flowers" by the Talking Heads. I think its because i work in a mall and would love to see it demolished to make way for a field of flowers. Some kind of displaced agression, anyway, it got me thinking and I would like to know: What music unrelated to Frank or the pixies do you fine people listen too?? I am sincerly curious and if maybe you could list like 5 bands you love it would maybe introduce me to some music I haven't heard.

I'm ruler of this moon boy, so if you moves I shoots!

Hey Mike, you should check out the High Dials if you haven't already. More Canadian goodness to add to your Canadian-heavy collection. I should mention that I'm not a fan of Stars at all. But, if you haven't heard it, you need to find Metric's debut, Grow Up and Blow Away. My favourite work of theirs. Have you heard Emily Haines' solo record, Knives Don't Have Your Back? I still have yet to grab it.

Thanks, I'll check them out.

Stars are hit and miss, but when they are hit, they are very, very good. Tracks such as Look Up and Ageless Beauty are sublime in my opinion.

I have some of that Metric debut, but not all of it. I do want it though 'cos it has some of my favourite Metric tracks on, so I really want to own it and hear it all.

I forgot all about Emily's solo record. Thanks for the reminder.

Mike2, I am more looking forward to Fields debut album.

I should add that I have recently discovered Elk City, and I am loving them.

Hem - Rabbit Songs
The Pernice Brothers - Discover a Lovelier You
Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins
Aimee Mann's Christmas CD

Those are in heavy rotation for me right now.

NAKED by TH is such a blast from the past for me! I was a junior in High School when it came out, and my friend and I both listened to this tape (heh....tape!) nonstop. The best song was Mr. JONES, and then of course, NOTHING BUT FLOWERS. Wow. I'm gonna have to go buy this on cd soon and see how well it's endured. Thanks for the memory!

I listen to David Bowie quite a lot. The earlier material by the Beautiful South has been a lot of attention too. Don't laugh. LOL.

Kristin Hersh
Ben Folds
Aimee Mann

Nothing But Flowers is my favorite TH song too ( I had wanted to hear it after reading American Psycho- it's quoted at the beginning; I can't think of the word for a quote at the beginning of a novel, something-gram, I think )

Is it time for another CD swap? I'd gladly do one.

Is that a real poncho or is that a Sears poncho?

Coastline, I actually got to see Bob Dylan at Jazzfest in New Orleans this year. It was pretty amazing to say the least.

Side one of Naked is pretty damn great.

For me these days it's either Ween or The Jesus Lizard. And then some Waits like every 7th day or so to help me get in the mood for the wintry season.

If I'm not listening to Frank (which is rare these days), it's likely one of the following:

Bob Dylan (heard of him?)
Nellie McKay
Morrissey / The Smiths
Tchaikovsky (yes, the Nutcracker dude)
Frank Zappa
Leonard Cohen
Lucinda Williams
Norah Jones
R.E.M.
Violent Femmes (whom I saw with the Pixies last year, woohoo)

Is that a real poncho or is that a Sears poncho?

I'm fickle, at the moment it's:

TV On The Radio
Melvins
Big Business
Tight Bros From Way Back When
The Hold Steady
Lair Of The Minotaur
Peeping Tom
Lightning Bolt
The Weakerthans
Lucero
The Bronx
Suicide File
Integrity

Oh and I can't count either

The big ones for me are:
Low - generally tagged slo-core but far more diverse and beautiful than that
Mogwai - beautiful noise
Four Tet - the ultimate genius of electronic music
Kristin Hersh - best girl singer ever

Plus many more.

At the moment I´m listening to a lot of Tim Buckley, he´s a little more subtle than his son. For the last year or so it´s been much Mike Patton, Fantomas, Mr. Bungle, Tomahawk, the one with Dillinger Escape Plan and stuff with John Zorn like Haemophiliac and Moonchild. I had been listening to a lot of Tool until they cancelled a show without saying a word a while back, seemed a little arrogant when you look at their website with pages dedicated to the pre and aftershow dinner menus so I left them alone.
Balkan music tends to drive me crazy, I love this limber stuff with broken bars, Taraif de Haidouks in particular. I´ve been listening to Bob Dylan´s Desire a good bit too. And some soundtrack to a Greek teevee show I have no idea what it´s called as the disc is entirely in Greek, full of these odd little jaunts in 9/4.
Prokofiev for piano rocks the house, Bach´s Goldberg Variations performed by Glen Gould in Salzburg in 57 with Gould muttering to himself like a crazy old guy in a bus-station just audible over the fugue. One that gets played most in the house though is a Mozart for piano and viola in C. And a deeply inspiring beatbox mix disc by Rahzel.
Also, Can´s Tago Mago.

p.s. nothing But Flowers is probably my favourite TH song.

p.p.s. despite all this I´m typing this in an internet cafe where they´re playing some boyband I went to school with (they seemed pretty regular at the time) covering a Billy Joel song I consider a form of psychological warfare.

Talking Heads are my favourite band, but they haven't been listened to in a little while (although last night I kept putting Nothing But Flowers on. Funny that).

I've been going back through a lot of 90s music in the past couple of months; Blur, Radiohead, Pulp, Supergrass, Beck, Weezer. The usual suspects.

Stuff that I've been listening to that's came out recently, well, BC Camplight (twee), Peter Bjorn and John (also a bit twee), Animal Collective (sometimes twee, but a different kind of twee), The Mountain Goats (not really ever twee at all), The Books (glitch-twee), etc etc.
