True, word of mouth, i believe, is still the strongest promotional 'tool' a band or artist can have. I think most people with a passion for music find out about artists via friends or discovery in to a particular bands past (i.e: nirvana opened up people such as pixies and melbins etc to a lot of people who would have maybe not listened to them other wise).

But this discussion was not in regards to hearing bands you may not of heard on radio, right? It was that 'radio bands suck'.
Radio is a marketing device which is used to promote songs and bands that have good radio pluggers. lol. It is to appeal to as wide an audience as possible, in order to achieve maximum listening figures.

There are plenty of smaller radio stations out there that provide a program of less 'mainstream' music. Or at least slightly less. Even most larger stations provide a show or two at least of something for a particularly genere inclined listener. With the internet and the wide variety of internet stations, and podcasts - i reckon everyone can find some thing they are looking for.

I think ive kinda lost my original point here...but anyway. yeah.

you cant say any bands that get on the radio suck....thats the most ridiculous thing i have ever heard...pixies get radio play, nirvana get radioplay, radiohead get radio play...and many more great bands get on the radio.

Thats true but the only way to get exposed to good music thats not on the radio is though someone else, there is some good, mainstream music that gets radio play (I think, I pretty much stopped listening to the radio because the ratio of good music to bad went way in the wrong direction). I would never heard of Frank if it wasn't through another person.

Well,this is stupid...

you cant say any bands that get on the radio suck....thats the most ridiculous thing i have ever heard...pixies get radio play, nirvana get radioplay, radiohead get radio play...and many more great bands get on the radio.

if you are talking about mainstream, commercial pop - such as boybands etc, then you're arguement should be on genres rather than radio versus non radio played bands.

just because a band has success...it doesnt mean they suck. and visa versa.

commercial/mainstream/popular/whatever you wanna call it isnt conclusive as to what is 'good' or 'bad' or 'successful' or not...perhas in the sense that they are more widly kown, and possibly hav moe mney than more unknown bands (and a bigger marketing budget)...

any way.the way to win this arguement is point out that you are both wrong, and both right. and its a stupd thing to arue about because it can never be proved one way or another - since music taste is obviouslydown to each person...unless you measured it in who grossed the most profit/sold the most albums or by most recognisable acts etc....

play them some Frank (or other good bands that don't get airtime)!...I already didn't really like radio stuff when I was introduced but he proves even more that an artist can be awesome and not get radio play.

With distance in time it is easier to be objective. You can show that historically what is a hit on the radio is not very good music. Find something that sucks that was a number one hit, like "Something Stupid" by Nancy and Frank Sinatra. Find out when it was released and then find something wonderful that was released about the same time that went nowhere. I suspect if you have time that you can do this for each shitty top ten hit from 1966 to the present.

Perhaps you need to turn to violence to make your point.

I should mention part of his argument was that just because i dont like radio mix doesnt make it bad which clearly it is

"I'm not really much on listening to the radio....yeah, mostly just mixes I make for myself and other folks....oh yeah? you'd like one, too?"

There. You can awe them with your fantastic mix. If they don't want your mix just let them keep on listening to Lit or whatever.
