The best bond film to date? Possibly. I still love the Sean Connery in the role, but this was likely the best film of the series. Several jaw dropping wow moments, genuine humor and emotion, and a cool factor that was off the charts.

all the backgrounds in the airport chase scene were cgi. They really filmed it, just not at an airport.

OK, I'm gonna watch them special features again. But what you described was compositing practical effects. Yes, they did actually whip an actual car through the air. I'm just saying they didn't create the whole thing in CGI. Are we talking about the same thing? I'm saying the building and the car are real world items that you can touch, not something completely made by a computer, like the cars in The Fast and The Furious race scenes, for example.

Where was the stupid CGI? In the DVD they said there basically was no CGI except for wire removal.
I don't recall seeing any, at least none that was obvious to me.

I think a great deal of that collapsing building (outer view) was CGI. I could be wrong, but I don't think I am. And I'm sorry, but whipping a car through the air, then deleting the cables, then removing a crane, relocating the car from a racetrack to a tarmac, then inserting a jet touching down, throttling back up, and applying physical force sufficient enough to seemingly throw said vehicle through the air...I think there were some computers involved in there somewhere. I could be wrong.

If there was, it was minimal. On the special features they showed it all and it was real. There was a gigantic gimble built for the interior set that could be flooded, and I believe they also destroyed a real building that was already scheduled for demolition for the exterior.

Overall the movie rocks.

Yeah, at first, I was really annoyed that they didn't start the movie with the traditional white balls scrolling across and the Bond theme, but now I get that he wasn't really Bond yet, so he had to earn his theme.
I'm really hoping that the next one starts traditionally though. It's like starting a Star Wars movie without the yellow logo flying into space.

See, but like the CGI comment, they actually did that stuff. Albeit with safety wires and stuntmen, but it was pretty much real, Jackie Chan style.
Watch the DVD special features and see - it's pretty impressive how much was real. They set a Guiness Book record by rolling the Aston Martin 7 times!
For the record, I rank it in the top 3 bond movies, but I also found the explanation of the poker stuff annoying and unnecessary. First, because if you don't understand what "all in" means, even if you don't play poker, you're a retard. Second, they never explained Baccarat, which nobody knows how to play, and it didn't suffer any of the other Bond casino scenes. Why start explaining now? It didn't add anything but time to the movie.

I've had the Chris Cornell theme song stuck in my head for weeks (I watched it on the plane coming back from a vacation in Europe). I never thought there would be a better Bond theme song than Thunderball, but I think Cornell nailed it.

Overall it was very good.
Anyone notice Richard Branson at the airport? (he set off the metal detector) Or the Virgin plane during the runway scene?
And you can really tell that Sony owns MGM and Columbia.
Why? Product placement.

I just saw it. I loved the foot chase, personally. It was quite excessive, but that's what I expect to see, so I was pleased. The rest of the movie was pretty damn good, too.

There was an interesting programme about the book on BBC 2 last night. They had achieve interviews with Fleming, and spoke to Daniel and Christopher Lee among others. |

Not noticed this thread before, I'm a massive Bond fan. Only managed to see half of Casino Royale; some labotomised idiots were sitting behind us, were talking all the way through and kept poking the back of my head. Managed to get them thrown out after almost getting into a fight. Loved what i saw though, not got round to going again yet.
I agree with TRANSMARINE about David Arnold. Time for Barry to return.

Forgot to note how much i enjoyed this when i saw it about a month ago. The one scene i was not too fond of in its excess was the chase scene in Africa in the beginning. Beyond that, nearly flawless as far as a Bond movie goes.

I agree, Mike, I thought that was a nice touch.
One criticism is that I thought this particular movie had one of the weaker opening credit sequences. The song was terrible and they seemed to run out of ideas with the card theme. You know, plus there were no silhouettes of young ladies.
I don't mind David Arnold, hit and miss. There are moments on the Tomorrow Never Dies soundtrack that he captures what's going on on screen and blends classic Barry with a more modern and immediate undercurrent. I didn't really notice the music in Casino Royale which is unusual for me, only that the Bond theme was conspicuously absent.

Despite some stupid CGI (I guess there's just no escaping it these days) and the sinking building finale, I enjoyed CASINO ROYALE immensely (oh, and save for Giancarlo Giannini constantly explaining Texas Hold 'Em to Vesper for the benefit of audience members NOT familiar with the game...that was annoying). M has become an all-out bitch, which is kinda funny. But I don't like seeing her apartment, or her in bed with a husband(?). It's as out of place as seeing M come to Bond's house in LIVE AND LET DIE. Okay...I'll stop nitpicking...I am an extreme Bond fanatic. CR is basically very close to the book (my favorite Fleming book), and third closest to source material in the entire series. The other two being FROM RUSSIA, WITH LOVE and ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE. Anyway, I thought Craig was superb. And the dialogue was some of the best since the Connery interpretations. However, David Arnold must be replaced as composer in any future installments. This is his 4th turn I believe as John Barry's succesor, and he just sucks. Either fully copy Barry, or go a totally different route. He tries way to hard, and misses the mark. Does no Broccoli realize his way-too-bombastic or yuckily lush cues are coming across as lampoons of Bond music...and that they belong in an Austin Powers movie?

I'm very upset i missed Clerks 2, Snakes on a Plane (despite owning a t-shirt) and the Science of Sleep. You didn't miss too much with Taladega Nights and the Last Kiss was pretty ok.

yep i really liked this film. i'm not really a fan of bond, so it's probably my favourite. i'm considered seeing it again too.
brain, very true, i've seen loads of films the past couple of months, usually i hardly every go. snakes on a plane, taledega nights, clerks II, the last kiss, borat, casino royale, and a good couple more i would have liked to but didn't.

I don't know about best in the series, though I don't know what I would put it up against that it would lose. I'm not sure it can necessarily compete with Goldfinger, but I'm not sure they're even comparable anyway.
Definitely the best Bond I've seen in theatres, and the best Bond since the Connery days, if nothing else. I'm completely sold on it, at any rate - in fact, I want to go see it again. Best movie I've seen this year, which admittedly isn't saying much, but it was really terrific.

As I said in the bad movie experiences thread, I was enjoying this until the bloody sound cut out, they couldn't run back the film, and we had to leave. I'm not a Bond fan, but I enjoyed the half-a-movie I saw! I'll have to catch it again!
