this letter takes up by far the most of any letter in my music collection. some of my favourites are SNFU, stone roses, suicidal tendancies, stellastarr* and of course my favourite....

SUGAR!

The waxworks were an immensely eloquent dissertation on the wonderful ordinariness of mankind.

I know it says just to name the best, but there are so many great "S" bands I thought would have been mentioned that I must submit a list. A few of my faves have already been mentioned, but I would like to add the following names:

Sun City Girls
Spearhead
Sun Ra
Soul Coughing
Suicide
The Slits
Silver Apples
Swell Maps
Swans
Syzygys

If we're going with surnames, I would also nominate Raymond Scott and Karlheinz Stockhausen, two of the twentieth century's most important contributors.

Nothing is ever something.

I don't think anyone has mentioned Sebadoh, I forgot about them

I'm surprised there's been no mention of The Soft Machine. That first album, especially, is unbelieveable. Also Judee Sill

I joined the cult of Souled American / 'cause they are a damn' fine band
Carl Posted - 11/20/2006 : 08:06:27
Septic Death, but I wouldn't call them the best S band I've ever heard! They were Pushead's band (y'know, the guy who has done a lot artwork for Metallica, among others).

Sonic Youth is my favorite 'S' band though.

Sugar probably get my vote, though I do have a soft spot for the Sisters of Mercy.

Spoon just can't seem to make a bad album. Not that they're trying.

maybe I'll kick it
Cult_Of_Frank Posted - 11/17/2006 : 09:23:18
I'm seconding Carolyn's (and later Darwin's) nomination of Spoon. I guess that means I'm thirding it.

Some might say Superfriends. Not me though.

"Now you're officially my woman. Kudos. I can't say I don't envy you."

After much deep thought I'll go with Superchunk and Spoon.
Homers_pet_monkey Posted - 11/17/2006 : 09:05:10
Sunset Rubdown are my new favourite 'S' band, but for all time I will have to go with The Shins and Sigur Ros.

I'd walk her everyday, into a shady place

The old man might say Slayer or Sepultura.
My son might say Slipknot or System of a Down.
I think I'll go with Spoon.

Stevens, Cat
Stooges
Smith, Elliott

I'd plump for the Smiths still, but Elliott would be a close runner up.
