Glad to hear it, kfs. Norah absolutely blows my mind. I'm in complete Norah nirvana right now, with her new album coming out yesterday and being so fucking good. And since this is a Tom Waits thread, not a Norah Jones thread, I'll point out that the second track on her new album, called "Sinkin' Soon" is VERY Tom Waits-like. It's got herky-jerky piano playing and really bawdy brass. And there are some great lines about a captain who lost a ship's oars, which could happen in almost any Tom Waits song.

Please pardon me, for these my wrongs.

Thanks, coastline!
Mission accomplished!
I got Norah Jones' cover of 'The Long Way Home' and at first I thought
Tom's is better. Now I can't decide which one I like better. I see (hear) what you mean.

Would you consider it a "small change?"

Okay. I'm on a mission...

kfs -- Now check out Norah Jones' version of "The Long Way Home." And then try to figure out which one is better. For the life of me, I can't choose. They're both simply amazing. Note the twist she puts on the line "You're my woman, and know you are my pearl." I love that little change. Makes me fall in love with her every single time.

And aren't you havin' fun?

I've been checking out Tom Waits a little bit.
The first song I got was "The Long Way Home" and I really like it.
Next I got "Underground". That one reminds me of They Might Be Giants.
"Swordfishtrombone" is interesting. What should I get next?

Yep. Never heard Swordfishtrombones, is it as good as RainDogs?

I think Swordfishtrombones is better, but that's the first Waits I ever really heard, so I'm sure my opinion is coloured somewhat.

Nothing is ever something.

I'm a huge fan, myself, especially The Heart of Saturday Night, which is one of my favourite albums ever. I love just about everything, though: Alice, Frank's Wild Years, Swordfishtrombones, Small Change, Nighthawks At the Diner, and everything in between. I just saw him in concert a couple of months ago, and his live show is amazing!

He's one of the great songwriters. There are some great covers of his work out there, including Sarah McLachlan's "Ol' 55" and Norah Jones' "The Long Way Home." His versions of those are fantastic, too. I also love "The Black Rider" and "Take Your Hat Off" (his versions and the covers) and a ton of his other songs. He has an amazing body of work. I also loved him with Iggy Pop in the movie "Coffee and Cigarettes."

EDIT: "Take Your Hat Off" isn't a Tom Waits song. It's Randy Newman's. But it could have been Waits'.

When do I get my first bee, damnit?
prozacrat Posted - 10/26/2006 : 19:32:17
I believe I heard Waits mention taking the title from the Pixies song. It was in a pretty old interview. Maybe it's in the new Tom Waits book I haven't finished reading yet. But regardless, I love the Tom Waits. Heart Of Saturday Night is a really special album to me. But the Alice/Blood Money double release was a really solid slice of Waits.

Right, Small Change, my mistake.

I don't particularly like Swordfishtrombones, but it's still pretty good, just doesn't stand up to some other Waits albums, I like his 70s stuff best. Bone Machine is fantastic too, anyone know if the title was inspired by the Pixies tune?

I just bought Rain Dogs last month, haven't given it enough spins to call it a favourite yet. Definitely a good one though - was that the next one he released after Swordfishtrombones?

My faves too. I'd just add Rain Dogs.

Yeah, it's Small Change. Unless there's a Spare Change out there too. Not crazy about that one, my favourites are Swordfishtrombones and The Black Rider. I also heap praise upon Mule Variations and Bone Machine. Not so hot on his '70s work - it's not bad, but not even close to what he has followed it up with.

Nothing is ever something.

Spare Change or Small Change?

I love him. Took me a few years to get used to his somewhat exaggerated croon/growl but his approach instrumentally if not great is always insteresting and original. Some great lyrics as well. I still have a bunch of his stuff on my "to buy" list but out of the collection I do have Frank's Wild Years is my absolute favorite.

Also my favourite. Spare Change is one of his most underated albums.
Can't wait to get that b-side collection that's coming out (November?).
