Posted - 09/11/2006 : 12:20:23 I want to be there. I want to be in a city with mountains right in the middle of it. I want to be on a beach listening to Bebel Gilberto. I want to listen to Celso Fonseca while sipping cocktails. I want to go to Sao Paulo and Rio and Belo Horizonte and the Amazon. I want to go to a game at the Maracana. I want to be able to tick another Top 5 Beach off my list. Brazil: it's so hot right now.

Hail to the king, baby!
Why don't you save then?
I'd walk her everyday, into a shady place
Because I want to go now! Don't you understand?!

Why don't you rob a bank?

I think if you're going to escape to Brazil, it's traditional to rob a train.
Keep an eye on the news...

Posted - 09/13/2006 : 06:53:19 Hola,
I've been there twice on vacation, in 2003 and 2004.
First I went to Buzios and Rio de Janeiro, beautifull places, I love Buzios, it's a small village with beautifull beaches and landscapes, it's very safe because the village has one gate where they control the people who enter and leave from this village, you can rent a buggy and visit all the beaches around Buzios or take a boat to a place called cabo frio where you can do snorkeling. At the night there's a street called rua da pedra where it's full of bars, restaurants and discotheques, it's a perfect place where to go with your girlfriend (or boyfriend). After that I went to Rio de Janeiro, beautifull, but it's unsafe, you only can walk safe trough Avenida Atlantico, where the beaches Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblone are located. I took a tour and I went to the Cristo, Pan de Azucar, Maracana Stadium, etc. The garotas (brazilian girls) are beautifull.
The second time, in 2004, I went to Sao Paulo and Curitiba, I went to watch the Pixies concert in Curitiba. Sao Paulo es a huge City with 20 millions of inhabitants, nice, but unsafe too, at night the car passes trough red lights because if you stop a thief could aim you with a gun. Curitiba it's different, it has 2 million of inhabitants but the culture there it's different (they have an strong german root), there's no poverty, it's very safe and has a lot of parks, like the park where pixies played, very good bar and restaurant.
But definitly if you can travel to Brazil, do it!
If I have time I'll post some pics.

Posted - 09/12/2006 : 12:21:52 That was how I felt about the Vatican, though the level of poverty surrounding it is nothing compared to what I've seen in placed like Haiti.

El Loco, I understand exactly - the whole cultural tourism thing makes me pretty uncomfortable, especially when you see the financial divides like that. I'm not a well-travelled man, really, but I've been to South Africa and seen shack house shanty towns next to beautiful, heavily-alarmed houses, and it's just depressing.
I still want to go though.

Posted - 09/12/2006 : 05:58:34 One of my friends stayed there 6 months this year for his researches -without speaking a word af portuguese, he liked the country and the people a lot. I'd like to go there too some day.
Funny thing about that country is that all my grandparents (on my mother's and on my father's side) lived there several years, in fact that's where they met each other and got married, without knowing themselves before -some of my uncles were born there too. Then I guess I owe a lot to this land... In fact I still have some family there, but I don't know them. Shame!

It's killing me. I remember seeing an advert for Rio in a tube station once, the whole vista spread out like that. Looks incredible. Anyone want to put me up/pay my air fare?

Posted - 09/11/2006 : 12:44:04 That last one's a cool pic. I like the freeway/parkway surrounded in green. I never really considered this before, but I wonder how constant light affects the greenery. Don't plants produce most of their oxygen at night when not photosynthesizing?

I think Brazil would be awesome too but for different reasons (apart from the maracana) The rainforest mainly, and, of course, the women.
[edit] - that just shows the paucity of my knowledge of Brazil
