I am genuinely gutted, though not greatly surprised. the only thing that does surprise me was that it was a stingray that got him.

Funny? hmmmmm

I was very saddened with the news of steve irwin's death - he was a great character - larger than life - and will be missed

Wouldn't it be funny if Peter Benchley had written a book about a killer stinray called Stings?

Probably the work of naive children, in any case, pretty awful.

<<Stingray mutilations prompt Irwin vengeance fears
Bonnie Malkin and agencies
Tuesday September 12, 2006
Guardian Unlimited

When a stingray killed the flamboyant naturalist Steve Irwin last week, his fellow Australian Germaine Greer outraged many by writing: "The animal world has finally taken its revenge." Now, it seems, the human world is hitting back.
Up to 11 stingrays have been found dead and mutilated on Australia's eastern coast since the Crocodile Hunter's death, prompting fears that Irwin's fans are exacting their revenge on the normally docile fish.

Officials from the department of primary industries and fisheries say two of the dead stingrays were not the victims of revenge attacks, but they have been unable to determine the cause of death of at least another nine.

The fact that the tails and barbs of several of the animals were lopped off has environmentalists worried.
Michael Hornby, the executive director of Irwin's conservation group, Wildlife Warriors, said he feared the rays were being hunted and killed in retaliation for the TV star's death.

"We just want to make it very clear that we will not accept and not stand for anyone who has taken a form of retribution. That's the last thing Steve would want," he said.

"I hope everyone understands we have to protect wildlife now more than ever. This is what Steve was all about."

Steve Irwin died when a stingray barb pierced his chest while he was swimming with the creatures on the Great Barrier Reef last week.

His death has prompted outpourings of grief in Australia and across the world, and some believe it may have triggered a demand for stingray souvenirs.

Mal Gulbrandson, 59, from Queensland, told the Sydney Morning Herald he had seen nine stingrays lying on Dundowran beach last Friday with their tails cut off.

Mr Gulbrandson said he believed someone had removed the tails and barbs from the fish to sell as mementos after Irwin's death. "They are taking advantage of Steve and using the spurs as jewellery," he said. "Steve, as we all know, was all for preserving the future."

A Queensland government spokesman said the mutilations would be investigated as possible cases of animal cruelty, but they were not initially thought to be related to Mr Irwin's death.

A memorial service for Steve Irwin is expected to be held next Wednesday in Brisbane's Suncorp stadium. Irwin's friend and business manager, John Stainton, said "quite a few people" from the entertainment industy had volunteered to perform at the event.

A private service was held for Irwin on Saturday at his family's zoo. At the ceremony, his closest friends and family sat around a campfire recounting their favourite stories of the passionate conservationist.>>

it's been a bad week for australian legends with news today that Peter Brock, another true blue aussie bloke, and an amazing motorracing driver, died in a car accident today while competing in the west australian targa rally.

i'd have put steve irwin and peter brock on the same level, so for both to be killed doing what they love in the same week is just amazing.....

all i can say, thank god for polio! brian

Looks like Steve's death footage has been leaked:

Shame you can't fast forward it, but it's worth sticking with it just for the ending.

Ah, that's a good point, hadn't thought of that... maybe because my car... is always empty... oh God! <runs away with face in hands>

You must be suggesting that it's not okay to have laws enforcing this. While I can understand this point of view (my child, my business) is it really fair to the child who has no control over their situation to be put in potential danger for no good reason. Adults are another story. While I think you'd be an idiot to not buckle up, I fail to see why that's anyone's business but that person's - and PLEASE don't give me this 'increased health care costs for all of us' reasoning. It may have some truth to it, but if we follow that road to its conclusion then none of us should be allowed to do many of the things we love, wherever potential harm may come from.

It's right to be enforced on adults too. If you don't wear one in the back and you crash at anything above snail pace, there is a very good chance you will kill anybody sat in front of you.

Good point. But I definitely wasn't saying he was worthless. I remember watching his show all the time about 5 years ago. It was quite enjoyable and educational. It's still upsetting that he died.

Irwin helped save the lives of countless animals through his environmentalism, so I wouldn't toss him aside as worthless to the general well being of the world.

i know that in his career he did a lot for environmental conservation.. his "extreme" tv show might have been for entertainment value, but a lot of education and awareness came out of it..

in this case it's ironic though because stingrays are rarely fatal for humans. he was just very unlucky.

i don't know if i buy into the whole responsibility-to-your-child thing.. what about other people who have dangerous jobs?

Yes, car seats are one of a large number of panic items that have been bought, this would include seat belts and air bags.

'Oh, crikey!' The guy is THE expert, he says HIS child was safe and somehow everyone else in the world knows better?

(this is not anger directed towards anyone) I see a whole new level of stupidity on display in the world with car seats, bike helmets and no smoking signs.

Even though he seemed like a goofy guy, he also seemed like a nice one. A bit misguided (the kid thing), but a nice guy. He had to know that this was part of the deal with constantly working with deadly animals. Still sad though. Good vibes out to his family and friends.

But he wasn't wrestling them! Why does everyone seem to think he like, grabbed one and held it to his chest? This was a freak accident involving a stingray that was hidden in the sand as he passed overhead it. He wasn't even filming a "dangerous" documentary at the time, but rather a soft piece on the coral reef for his daughter's upcoming television show. Really, it happened because he wasn't putting his life in danger and his guard was down. I've seen the man hold spitting cobras up to his face with no problem; he would've been fine had he been ready to handle the stingray.

Whilst she makes some reasonable points, it's a tad unfair on the whole. He did more to get kids into wildlife conservation than anyone I can think of.

My mate's 8 year old newphew burst into tears when his mum told him.
