It looks like the zombie movie is alive and well: there are three new zombie pics on the way-George Romero's Diary Of The Dead, 28 Weeks Later and Living Dead Girl. None of them have really actually started production (principal photography has just begun on 28 Weeks), so there's no photos available or anything, but here's some info:

You may have heard about this already, but the Popcorn Taxi screening of SUNSHINE in Melbourne a few weeks ago was something of a disaster. About halfway through, the film began running backwards, upside down, and back to front. It took people a little while to cotton onto this, as it looked a bit like a dream sequence from earlier in the film. Soon, the movie was stopped, and we were told it would be five minutes to fix it. About forty-five minutes later, the film started up again on the wrong reel, and was stopped about ten minutes later when they decided that there'd be no time for the film and the Q&A with Danny Boyle and Rose Byrne.

Luckily, I got to catch the film in its entirety a week later (see my review below), but the following morning we got the chance to interview Mr Boyle for the upcoming season of "The Bazura Project" (everybody keep June free). He's easily one of the nicest, most good-natured people we've spoken to. Very chatty, too. One tidbit worth noting was when I asked about a possible 28 MONTHS LATER. I was half-joking, but he revealed that there are actually tentative plans for a third film, and the end of 28 WEEKS LATER will have a setup designed for this sequel. (This should also be a lesson for me about tardiness: in the four weeks since the interview, I got scooped. Oh well. My bad.)

He also told us that he'd done a bit of second unit directing on 28 WEEKS LATER, and had enjoyed it so much, he's seriously considering coming back for MONTHS (I don't know if this is the official working title, or if there is an official working title, but it's the sort of presumption I feel comfortable making). So there you have it.

'Zombies' bear down on Brisbane

Horror film fans dressed up to look like an army of the undead have been stomping the streets of Brisbane, Australia, in an annual Zombie Walk.
Spattered with fake blood and their faces painted a deathly white, the "Zombies" staggered across the city to the botanical gardens.

The event originated in North America and is in its second year in Brisbane.

Its website explains that it is not an April Fool's joke "but serious, in a flippant sort of manner".

Zombie Walks in Canada and the US have attracted hundreds of revellers.

An event in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, drew nearly 900 "Zombies" in October 2006.

Warner, Snyders enlist in new 'Army'
Director, studio reteam on zombie film

By PAMELA MCCLINTOCK

As "300" continues its march through the worldwide box office, director Zack Snyder is mustering another sort of army.
Snyder and Warner Bros. are reteaming on zombie action-thriller "Army of the Dead," based on an original story by Snyder. He's producing with wife Deborah Snyder through their recently launched shingle, Cruel & Unusual Films, based at Warners.

It's too early to say whether Zack Snyder is considering "Army" as a directing vehicle for himself. He will next direct "Watchmen" for Warner, based on the Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons graphic novel about a group of retired superheroes who reunite to save the world from disaster. He's set to begin lensing at the end of the summer, with the studio eyeing a 2008 release.

Snyder and Warner have set Joby Harold, who penned the upcoming "Awake" for the Weinstein Co., to pen the script for "Army." Cruel's Wesley Coller is exec producing.

Set in a quarantined Las Vegas in the not-too-distant future, "Army" revolves around a father who tries to save his daughter from imminent death in a zombie-infested world. (Snyder got his first taste of zombies directing the remake of "Dawn of the Dead" for Universal.)

Snyder, who has been on a press tour promoting the opening of "300" domestically and overseas, told Daily Variety that he wants "Army" to have a sweeping, epic quality, along the lines of the highly stylized "300."

"I feel like there hasn't been a zombie movie on the scale that we want to do it," Snyder said from the Bahamas, where he is shooting a commercial.

He said it's too early to say how "Army" will be shot -- "300" was filmed entirely in front of a green screen -- but that the project is likely to borrow some of the same techniques.

Cruel & Unusual also is developing action-fantasy "Sucker Punch," which Snyder is co-writing with Steve Shibuya from an original story by Snyder.

Zack and Deborah Snyder are repped by CAA. Harold also is repped by CAA.

Damn co-opted Zombies! There was a time, a Golden Age, when these creatures were an anomaly and unwelcome in Hollywood... and then the 'oughts' (aughts) happened... and they're a success. Infected or undead... it's all the same as far as I'm concerned.

NYCC 07: Straczynski Scripting World War Z
B5 creator adapting zombie tome for Paramount.

by Scott Collura

US, February 24, 2007 - J. Michael Straczynski, the creator of the sci-fi series Babylon 5 who has also become a popular comic book scribe in recent years, announced yesterday that he is writing the screenplay adaptation of the zombie book World War Z for Paramount. The Max Brooks novel, which was optioned last summer by the studio for Brad Pitt's production company Plan B, is subtitled An Oral History of the Zombie War.

"You all know the novel World War Z?" asked Straczynski of his audience during a New York Comic-Con panel on Friday. "I'm adapting that for Paramount. For Brad Pitt potentially -- we'll see what happens. He might be the star in it. So things are going very well for a TV guy."

Straczynski acknowledges that the book needs to be modified in order to work as a movie, particularly since it is an anthology that features no main character or plot, but rather skips around through time via the recollections of the many survivors of a decade-long war against the living dead.

"What you have to do is… the book, if you haven't read it, is a wonderful, wonderful book in an interview format after the zombie wars," explains the scribe. "You see how we survived. It's very political, very smart, very cagey, but there's no main character. So you have to create who the interviewer is and give him some background and bring him from place to place to place to place. And they said, 'Feel free to get as political as you want, as incisive as you want, to play with it. You could look at this as a Katrina kind of catastrophe.' But I'm being very faithful to the book, letter by letter when I can, and I'm on about page 70 right now and I'm really happy with it. I'm really pleased with it actually, so if that goes well we might go into production on that one."

Very good (and lengthy) article about political menanings of zombie movies, and a bunch of books published on the subject. Just don't be put off by the stupid first line:

<<The zombiephiles—that odd cohort of nerds, video game addicts, and mullet-headed grindhouse nostalgists who have made the flesh-eating zombie a central figure of modern culture—know all about chewed kidneys, shambling ghouls, moldering flesh, barricaded doors, deserted streets, and the all-important bullet to the brain.>>

It's all there: http://www.reason.com/news/show/118315.html

Well, they were zombified...were'nt Romero's zombies meant to have been casued by a crashed satellite, or something? I remember that in Night Of The Living Dead, although maybe it was just characters speculating what caused it.

"28 Days Later" didn't even technically have any zombies, just infected people who acted like zombies.

The forthcoming Will Smith Omega Man remake I Am Legend is supposed to have very 28 Days Later-ish scenes of deserted streets. An zombies make an appearance, too!

I actually just watched "28 Days Later," because my girlfriend now has a crush on Cillian Murphy. Since it doesn't look like he'll be in the sequel, though, we might end up giving that one a miss.

Yeah, I don't know if the film was inspired by that song. Some reports have suggested the film is a remake-of this, I presume:
