I only found 2 references to Joanna Newsom using a quick google search of FBNet (Broken Face, Vilainde).

I heard the song Inflammatory Writ on a local university radio station. You can hear it too! It's at 25:40 of the August 10th Broadcast of Million Star Hotel on CKUW

There's a video of another song at Drag City.

I'm not often inspired by anything I hear on radio, mostly because I never listen to the radio anymore, but this has real promise. You could say it's another Californian sounding Southern.

The lyrics are absolutely fine, I will go find a CD/EP today.

I see she has been in some bands, anyone know anything about her?

And maybe Brian can explain how she is giving a concert at a pool in Brooklyn. There's one "pool" where I live that would have the facilities for a concert but the whole building is concrete and glass with 15 meter ceilings.

JNewsom's new one, due November, leaked a few days ago.
Ys Track Listing:
01. Emily
02. Monkey & Bear
03. Sawdust & Diamonds
04. Only Skin
05. Cosmia

Any thoughts on what you've heard of the music?
IMO: her voice is tolerable, the string arrangement is amazing (20th century meets jazz), the songs are super long but meaty (lots of interesting parts, progressive), nice lyrics. It's going to be months for digestion because of it's complexity.

BF: as it wasn't more than 3 feet deep

Now I see how funny that was.

6800 people crowded in a pool, the more that drown the less you have to support your neighbor?

That's a bit disappointing, I see that she has had some aspirations in Free Jazz and looks to be quite a knowledgeable musician. Next time you’re enjoying yourself try thinking about the rest of us, eh?

I forgot to mention CKNR that pops up in the old KY-58 slot, your favourite octogenarian disc jockeys spinning those old radio shows, music for octogenarian cowboys and some pretty nice old Jazz and Pop.

The pool venue was interesting, but not THAT interesting. The pool was built during the New Deal and was built to hold 6800 swimmers (!). I don't see how that could be possible, as it wasn't more than 3 feet deep. Basically, you walk in to the park, you walk through a gate, and the pool is in front of you. You walk down 3 steps, and you're 'in' the pool. The stage is at the far end. It was similar to seeing any outdoor show, 'cept you're on concrete, not grass.

She played pretty close to the record for the 3-4 songs i know.

And sorry i don't have more merch answers - it was raining before the show, and after the show i had to catch a train, so i didn't really check the merch booth, sorry.

There's two university stations and a college station now and you can pick up various things here and there, one from Portage plays some good but older music.

The 'Jazz' station has hit the toilet, there's a great show on UMFM that an acquaintance of mine does, and there's always CBC After Hours, the SRC FM channel (89.9) has some more.

CJOB, that's the old man in me talking. Live Audio Wrestling at 10:00pm Sunday followed by Coast To Coast AM, 6 solid hours of radio. The Coach Berry Show and Doug Brown's Spin Zone and any Bomber stuff.

There can't possibly be any cool kids left, not enough to support a store anyways. It's embarrassing, or I'm embarrassed for them!

I heard 'Erin' from Walnut Whales on that same university radio station a couple of days ago (I can't remember which show, probably million star hotel, it was themed songs containing a person's name), it didn't have the same polish as the label release but I'm totally sold on this lady.

It will be a good start to November, she has a new release the same day that the 5th and second last season of Northern Exposure comes out and only 9 days after I see FB!

I just got the CD and EP last night, that's why I remembered to post. Her lyrics are like bathing in chocolate, rich rich creamy. I didn't want to miss a word, I read along and googled and looked-up words. I can hardly wait to call someone poetaster.

Aside from the ones already mentioned, Music Trader is good in Winnipeg. I think they have three or four locations, but the only one I've been to is on Osborne. As the name indicates, they have a sizable used selection but a lot of new stuff too - some I'd looked for at home and never been able to find. Go check it out, I must have spent close to $1,000 there last summer.

Online shopping is a good way to find obscure stuff, but nothing beats the feeling of walking into a shop looking for one disc and leaving with a dozen.

I have to agree with you about Winnipeg radio; the university station has (like all university stations) both the best and worst shows. Beyond that I could only find CBC and a bunch of crap - not that I tried too hard.

Nothing is ever something.

The Peg! I can't imagine that Saskatoon has two excellent places to find music in the "cool kids" genre (ie. stuff the good people on this here board like), and Winterpeg has none. Of the places you mentioned, none do special orders? Which one (or ones) is the cool local indie music store? What about online purchases? I'm sure you could order Joanna Newsome's first (and her soon to be released second) album directly from Drag City (her label). While you're at it, get some Jim O'rourke. The jazz lover in you may dig on his interesting mesh of styles.

As for your cool jazz store, I would be way into that if I were way into jazz. I basically like anything done with a passion and a sense of doing it the "right" way. Now I sound like Larry Brown. If you're every in S'toon, come down Broadway Avenue and stop at the Vinyl Diner. My man Stu will treat you right, there's a decent seletion of newly released goodness as well as a plethora of used, weird and out of print stuff along with a boatload of cheap old vinyl. There's also the Vinyl Exchange downtown, which is much bigger, has a larger selection, but sadly it stays alive mostly due to its "bong" section, which is where I see most patrons when I'm there. It's actually kind of depressing.

Good luck my friend, I hope you find the elfin child-voiced album of your dreams.

Edit: okay, I just read your post again and I see you're all over the Drag City scene and ordering stuff. Please ignore my somewhat (in hindsight) condescending advice re: the internet. Needless to say, you know it exists. Hey, did you hear Frank Black has a website and a forum? You should check that out too!

What was the 'pool' venue like?

I'm in Winnipeg where they closed the two A & B Sound stores. There is Into The Music and Planet Of Sound and the ?Sound Exchange? (all used), the Folk Festival store is a gem but has a precisely bizarre set of cds, I haven't been to Wild Planet in a long time but I'll look and see if they've changed from scratchy old used CDs and Thrash Metal T-Shirts, an okay selection for Jazz at McNally Robinson Books, a little bit less interesting and very expensive at one of the Chapters Bookstores, even the once decent Sam the Record Man is bleh. Other than that it's all HMV. One CD Plus store is rather nice, they have a good selection of Punk and Metal and Rock, not much Jazz though.

The downtown A & B was great while it lasted but they spent a whole lot of money converting an old seedy hotel into a large two floor store. They suffered high taxes and construction and then when the MTS Centre opened I could never get a parking spot. CD Plus bought and closed the last truly wonderful music store we had, Musiplex. It was in the Birks Building, always had free compilations to give out, a reliable mail-order desk and the best Jazz selection I've seen north of the border. Before that there was Kelly's I think, and the wonderful mostly punk Records On Wheels.

If I had money, I'll tell you what I'd do, I'd open a Jazz specialty shop with a stupidly expensive inventory. My theory is people who still want CDs want them in their hot little hands. There are sliding shelving units that will store thousands and thousands of CDs in a small area. I'd put in terminals with a nice fully digitized inventory, like a modern Consumers Distributing or a digital Lee Valley, one or two friendly faces, get orders filled a little faster. If you could just tie that in with a radio station that actually played decent Jazz that you can sell.

If anybody can suggest better places, thank you.

I'm entirely grateful for Ms. Newsom being so unpopular. I tried the Folk Festival Music Store, then I went to CDPlus. Future Shop and Best Buy's websites have never heard of her and Amazon.ca would take weeks. I ordered, for very little money, from the Drag City label site.

While I was at CDPlus, however, they had the Art Tatum box set I've been searching for and re-ordering for months. I said "Holy Crap!" which drew way too much attention, "I've been here 10 times and I never saw it." And I found a used replacement for my long stolen John Mayall, The Turning Point disc.

Hammerhands, where do you live? Why are you shopping for music at Best Buy and Future Shop and CDPlus?

Yes it was. It rained all throughout the opening act, Martha Wainwright. But, luckily, it cleared up.

Ms. Newsom was impressive. She played 4 pieces from her new album, each of which was quite long. I'd say from 5-11 minutes long - it certainly made up the bulk of her set, as she only played 3 or 4 older songs ("Sadie," "Bridges and Balloons," and "The Book of Right On" for sure). But watching that voice with her great harp playing was really something to see. A memorable set no doubt.

Neko Case blew me away. My crush on her has only grown exponentially this past week. Her band was particularly ace - quite tight and capable. All in all, a really excellent show. As i told a friend - it was like Lilith Fair, only good.

It's not for Sonic Youth cause I saw them last June. It's just that it's the only gig I've been to this year.
