Posted - 07/29/2006 : 08:12:38 last week i was layed off from what was quite possibly the best job i've ever had because my employer decided it was a good idea to import highly (frighteningly) unskilled but dirt cheap workers from africa. the job market here really sucks right now. i am beyond despondent.
when will i stop feeling violated? when will i stop compulsively eating ice cream? does anyone want to loan me rent money?

thanks for your kind thoughts hpm.
well from what i know about employment law is a lot depends on if you live in the US and you live in a state that has employment at will. this means you could walk away or they could fire you at any notice. however, if you were part of a union, that should help.
typically employeers will give you a package that is the same as other employees at the same pay grade that have been there the same amount of time. so for example if you've been there 20 yrs they might give you 20 weeks. however, they DO have to offer you unemployment and cobra health insurance.
take the unemployment because it's not the government that pays your unemployment, it's the company that laid you off so be sure to use that up until you find another job. be sure to sign up asap to get all your benefits!! also make sure to sign up for your cobra asap so you have health insurance.
since you were part of a big layoff I think that the reason you got screwed is that they want to treat everyone pretty much the same to aviod lawsuits.
what i am suprised is that they didn't give you some sort of severance agreement for you to sign b/c usually companies give you that severance in return for your agreement not to sue your former employer.
even though you didn't get a package you also have the option of hiring a lawyer to negotiate a better package for you.
so, I am so sorry to hear about your situation. it's not fun.
i am just putting it behind me because it's not fun to fight things out and really it drags things out emotionally at least for me. i was in a good situation but it turned bad with a new supervisor and actually for me i am just so happy that i don't have to work in that enviornment anymore.
good luck with whatever you decide d. i am sure you will make the right choices.
well i am now watching a documentary on a&e on meth. they say there's a lot of $$$$ in it. starting up a meth lab...cool. lol. |

we have a ton of filipino nurses at the hospital i work (worked) at, they recruit very heavily over there as well as in india. i've always found them to be outstanding coworkers, knowledgeable, well-trained, good patient advocates. and they demand to be payed comparably to american nurses.
most the african nurses they've sent so far (8 with 14 more on the way) are ducks out of water, they don't know what the hell to do in a big american hospital. i would go so far as to say some of them dangerous. but who cares sbout safety when they'll work for $10,000 - $20,000 less than we will. no benefits, either. they're forced to sign a three to five year contract, and if they start complaining about working conditions or piss off the boss in that time it's back to the motherland. and it's doubly awful for them because of the lingering resentment by the staff that didn't get canned("they took yer jerb!" "der der der!")
they gave 18 of us the boot last week, some had worked there for nearly 20 years and many are single moms. at least have the decency to wait until it isn't dead in the middle of slow season and no one is hiring! bastards. it really felt like a family there, i can't believe we didn't it coming.
damn you, savings-destroying vacation to nashville! damn you to hell!
i hate anyone who doesn't like me.
That's ridiculous, I can't believe they'd just throw you out the door after 20 years, cost savings or no! Especially without a fair severance package. Perhaps the route here is to take your story to the people.
At least you can take solace in the fact that it wasn't just you, it was quite a few of you.
I suspect that with the labour shortage we're seeing, there will be plenty more cases like this in coming years. Since deflation isn't exactly likely, the net result is prices are inflated meanwhile wages deflate (since, let's face it, you still have to compete with coworkers wherever they're from, but hopefully you can be compensated for what I suspect is your superior training and experience) which equals... <da-duh-duh-daaaaaa> lower standard of living.
Anyway, with your experience, I'm sure you can find another good job somewhere. It may require a move, though, that's the part that sucks. Well, that and being let go baddaboom.
Seriously, call up the newspaper with your story.

Posted - 07/31/2006 : 09:34:41 Dayanara, I am so sorry you got laid off! Especially because it is very obvious you really enjoyed your job. Are you a member of a Nurses' Union/Association? If so, isn't there something they can do to stop the unfair laying off of nurses?
I tell you health care in the US is going to hell in a hand basket! We need people like you. Don't they understand that?

But, I echo Tre - I have every faith in you as you seem to be one of the depressingly few people I come across that actually care about their job enough to want to do it well, and if that doesn't sort it out for you, then you have every right to go postal.

I did but it's only a temp job so maybe it's a part time mojo thing. You'll get something else I'm sure of it, you're obviously smart and dedicated to what you do and if the fools can't see it I'll burn off all their hair and disfigure their faces with razor blade noughts and crosses.

Posted - 07/29/2006 : 13:11:04 Importing staff in health care isn't uncommon at all. There's a huge number of vietmanese and thai nurses here. Initially it was to make up for the short fall but now it's more that they're cheaper.
