Losing my best friend of 4 years, my lover, my concert buddy and my general "partner in crime" is the most devastating thing that has ever happened to me.

All I do is drink, smoke and listen to very depressing music...I've hit a wall with the music - any suggestions on the most heart-wrenching, depressing songs that you have ever heard?

Lou Reed's record Berlin is extremely depressing, yet somehow Sad SOng usually makes me feel better in a weird sort of way.

My Morning Jacket's It Still Moves & At Dawn cd's have some incredibly intimate moments on them which can fit well when you are depressed. I especially love much of the end of It Still Moves...just gorgeous stuff.

Good luck with the emotions, King. Hope it gets better for you soon.

Wilco is kind of depressing to listen to, but in a different way

I don't know how helpful this might be, but I'll say:
the sad songs from that Ben Folds Five album like "Smoke";
most Aimee Mann, especially "Lost in Space";
or just try side B of Bjork "Debut"- not exactly depressing, but kind of sad, and "Come to Me" is such a nice song.

Definitely give Mogwai and Low a go.
Also try Godspeed You! Black Emperor

and a must would be Dirty Three - specifically Horse Stories and Ocean Songs albums...honestly, doesn't get much more "depressing" than that.

also, early Cat Power and early Throwing Muses and Kristin Hersh

I've mentioned this album before, it's a Duessie. Roberta Flack sings Do What You Gotta Do by Jimmy Webb on the album Chapter Two.

Flack is one of those singers like Tony Bennett who can sell you every line. Jimmy Webb is some sort of genius I must learn about.

I think I always say these 2 but I think they're perfect for you;
Wonderful - Adam Ant
She Wants to Play Hearts - Ryan Adams.

Give The album Sea Change by Beck a spin, It ussually works for me. Even if you aren't a Beck fan don't let that put you off. It's pretty much all acoustic driven, not his usual affair.

Or how about the song Maps by the Yeah yeah Yeahs.

Good call. Hunted By a Freak works so well for a lot of things.

Mentioning REM once more if you want to torture yourself try You Are The Everything and the untitled track from Green and Let Me In from Monster is pretty harrowing.

Radioheads Black Star is *the* death of a relationship song (the "this is killing me" line makes me cry if I'm in the right mood) but Morning Bell and Bulletproof are pretty good.

Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved me by the Smiths is another good one.

And as for Low, Cue The Strings gets me.

Jeff Buckley, all of Grace but especially Last Goodbye.

Actually, I don't know how helpfull this is because these bands are usually laughed at but Longpigs Over Our Bodies I have a lot of love for, there's a line "Oh he makes her shine, she shines for you and I've failed myself if she loves you more" that I always found touching. The way it starts too: "Nobody matters and this is depressing you, no one on earth could explain all of this" The second odd one is the Boo Radleys Everything is Sorrow which has a line that reminds me of your first post: "And you know you shouldn't have another cigarette but nothing else makes much sense, nothing else will recompense"

I'll second this. Also, it's almost so obvious it hurts, but talking of REM... Everybody Hurts is a great song.
Tried any Low? Laser Beam might be worth a listen.

No she's not dead, thankfully. We bring out the best and the worst in each other and mutually decided that it was an unhealthy relationship. But it completely sucks to have no support system in place because I completely gave myself to her in every way. And now I feel so empty and alone.
