I haven't been around much for a long while, so most of you probably don't know who the hell I am, but I wanted to mention this show in case anyone might be able to catch Frank Black in Lexington, KY this August. http://www.dameky.com (go to "Tickets and Shows" and scroll down for show info)

My friend Joe Manning is a songwriter in the vein of old mountain music with Hank Williams Sr/Johnny Cash sensibilities. He's from Louisville, and will be opening for FB at the Dame in Lexington on Aug. 12th. If you're curious about his music, you can hear a few songs here. If that link doesn't work for some reason, you can just go to tapitfame.com and search for Joe Manning. I did the art for his repressing of his latest album, which hopefully will be available by the time he plays this show.

Not to pimp it too much, but Spudboy and I are directly involved with tapit. Been meaning to mention it here before, but I figured it was actually relevant now.

Hey hey TarTar!

glacial - It's really too bad we couldn't meet up. There might be other opportunities though, as we are cutting our Ohio noose and moving back to Ky asap. We'll likely be at the same shows again.

We were at the front left of the stage, Perry (spudboy) was videotaping Joe's set. Then we ran into a very happy Clark/KSR at the back during the second half of Frank's set (BOY was that a bunch of songs!). I am friggin stoked that you dug Joe's music. There was a lot of crowd noise during his set, but I figure it was just an unfortunate mix of a confused clientele and maybe a bit of that Lexington/Louisville rivalry I've heard tell about. Yeah, his set opening is pretty damn ballsy - he's done that every show we've seen.

What did you think of Frank's show? I wish he had taken it a little bit slower and said more between songs, but that was the first time I've seen his solo acoustic set, so maybe that's his thing.

Daisy, if I see Joe this weekend he has a bunch of posters - I'll be sure to mail one to you if I get them.

Man, apl, I didn't catch this thread before I went to the show...I was looking forward to meeting you and SpudBoy. Damn, probably passed right by you and never even knew...

Joe Manning was awesome. I thought the crowd was a little bit rude, though, everyone just kept on blabbing all through his performance. I thought it was really cool the way he came out there and just opened up his performance with some vocals; no instruments yet, just his voice. Hell of a way to start a set.

apl4eris Posted - 08/11/2006 : 15:37:06
grazie, y'all. Daisy, I don't know if they got printed in time, so not sure if they're going to be for sale. if not, I can just send you a big version and you can print it.

It would be an honor to make you a flyer for a song, newo. Email me whachoo need and I'll see if I'm up to the challenge.

Woo! FB and Joe tomorrow night, and we're dragging spudboy's folks along w/us. It's gotta be good to keep them up past their bedtime. Gonna see if we can get backstage and say howdy to Frank.

Hi, Jen nice to see you back! That site is cool I really dig Joe's stuff. Wish was closer to KY to catch him live. Killer poster too! Do you have any extras for sale?? I love owls.
apl4eris Posted - 08/10/2006 : 16:07:47
Cool, glad you dig it Mike.

Glacial - are you still goin to the Frank Black/Joe Manning show? You wanna meet up with us for some booze or soda?

I figured I'd post the flyer I made for it (for Joe). It's not much, but hey I only had a day to do it:

I'm excited for this show. I've been in a no FB/Pixies cycle for the past long while, so I think it'll be pretty fresh to my ears.
Homers_pet_monkey Posted - 07/27/2006 : 10:50:42
Oh I'm loving them. Perfect for the weather we are having.

I really like the sound of crickets in the background. Very nice touch.

Keep me posted on that new album. Have they any plans to come to the UK?

Wow, it really is good to see all of you again here.

glacial, damn glad to hear you'll be at the show - it'll be great to meet you. I've never been to The Dame, and I haven't been to Lexington since I played hooky in high school (around 89 maybe?), so this is going to be pretty interesting. Anyone know what material Frank is covering on this tour?

On another note, it looks like spudboy and I might finally have cause to start that small label we've been thinking about, and press this cd ourselves. The label won't be able to get it done in time for this show. So....if anyone has any advice on the topic of tiny labels and distributon, I'm all ears.

Hey Apl! Thanks for posting that! It looks like I'm going up to Lexington for the show, and it just so happens to fall a few days after my birthday, so I feel entitled...

Nay problem lass, you have a proven track record of posting interesting/occasionally random/helpful links!

I'm good thanks, oh the things I could tell you. I'd get killed though so we'll stick at good.

Thanks for the kind words about Joe's music. I'm probably going to pass them on. He'd dig that.
That album was recorded under a tunnel in a park in the middle of the night - during the insane year of the 17-year cicada onslaught. Amazing phenomenon. SO LOUD. And they were everywhere. Anyway, they had a cop called on em, and I think there was a helicopter involved. They were told to leave or they'd be arrested. You know, for playing banjo and singing quietly. They stayed and almost got it. What I hear anyway. I've seen the copy of the report. heh

Cheesypants - Quincy?

The mind boggles....does this have something to do with yogurt?
Forgive me my forgetfulness, I am an old fart, but at least my paola rrhoids have cleared up.

CoF - Doin well, thanks! you? I hear you're all worldly-fied now. Moose ain't good enough for you anymore eh?

That music is beautiful...the cicadas in the back are such a great addition. And I think I heard cars driving past? Very nice. Captured summer alright.
