This is all so depressing. Today I learned successively that they're gonna film a remake of Sam Peckinpah's THE WILD BUNCH, and a movie based on the Broadway musical version of John Waters' HAIRSPRAY. With Divine's role played by... wait for it... John Travolta.
So I did a bit of research on imdb.com and found that they're also gonna release remakes of THE FLY, THE EVIL DEAD and HALLOWEEN (yep, not a sequel but a remake of the Carpenter movie, directed by Rob Zombie). Now if you think that couldn't get lower, the studio initially wanted to do Michael Myers vs Pinhead movie but chenged their minds due to bad response. Meanwhile next year we're gonna get Alien vs Predator 2.
Seriously, this is terrifying. They're taking one of the best westerns ever made, and decide to do a remake of it directed by the guy who wrote the screenplay for S.W.A.T. and FAST & FURIOUS (yeah, there was a screenplay written for it). And who the fuck is gonna play Ash in the new Evil Dead? floop, you work in there, why don't you tell 'em?

I have an *ahem* copy of it but I haven't gotten round to watching it yet. Maybe I'll do that tomorrow seeing as it's going to be so damned hot. I was forced outdoors today but I swear tomorrow will be spent in darkened rooms with a electric fan watching b movies wearing very little.
I haven't seen the original the hills have eyes though so I won't be able to compare. The new Evil Dead remake is already dead to me. Evil Dead 4 (army of darkeness 2) however.. you just know I'm going to be insufferable when that comes out. |

I wouldn't consider it an Evil Dead remake if there isn't an Ash character. It will be just another crappy movie with a famous name.
I usually hate remakes, just for the fact that they're the vision of someone from the original film, which isn't normally the same way I saw it.
Having said that, I enjoyed the new "The Hills Have Eyes". Did you see that one, kittie? It's just another zombie movie, actually. With the amazing actress that is Emilie de Ravin.

The only time I want a remake is when the original butchered what could have been a good film. "The Fountainhead" comes to mind, as I think I mentioned in one of those generic film threads we don't have around here any more. But since "Atlas Shrugged" is apparently being developed, I guess a new "Fountainhead" is not likely anytime soon.

the problem is that the studios are owned by gigantic corporations now. they're not interested in taking risks or making art, but going whatever the safest bet is in terms of making a profit. which means remakes and genre films.
luckily there are still good films that slip through the cracks, both in the Hollywood system and independently..

When they remake a movie, they now have two movies to sell. The remake and the original, which typically gets released or re-released on DVD in a new Ultimate Deluxe Special Collector's Edition when the remake comes out. |

I won't necessarily say that all remakes are bad, but I really think it makes more sense to come out with, y'know, slightly original ideas. But I guess that would mean having to pay screenwriters.
I actually liked the new "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," but that wasn't a remake per se, since it was based more on the book than on the earlier film.
And what I heard about the Michael Myers vs. Pinhead film was that it was cancelled because the late Moustapha Akkad (who was still alive at the time, obviously) didn't approve of it.

Actually, both Raimi and Campbell are planning the ED remake, without an Ash character! But there have been hints at a possible sequel to the originals at some stage too.
So many remakes are pointless. It's often just a way to bypass the creative process....you just take the original idea and throw together a crap script, hire a few hot young stars and hope that the majority of the movie-going public doesn't think the finished product below them.

Screw Raimi, Evil Dead without Bruce Campbell is some seriously wrong action right there. I read they aren't even having an Ash in it. It's fucking ridiculous is what it is.

[edit] would like to clarify I don't think they should have an Ash in, expecially not with the rumoured actors for the role. Stifler as Ash? I don't think so. I suspect it's going to be a remake in the loosest sense of the word. Like Dawn of the Dead.

not all remakes are bad. THE FLY was actually a remake of a 50's film.
it's true that most of them suck, but i think it's wrong to blame Hollywood completely. the people who complain about Hollywood putting out shitty films usually always go see all of them too. if people didn't go see these shitty films maybe there would be more pressure for more diverse offerings, instead of remakes and genre films.

I'd have to say the remake of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory was the most horrible thing anyone could ever do! Why would they change the Oompah Loompahs?!?! And completely change the plot and characters? Especially Willy Wonka. Gene Wilder was a thousand times better.

Remaking Evil Dead is just rude.
They're doing Miami Vice as well, although I guess that's a TV-movie thing, rather than a remake. Apparently, Mogwai are on the soundtrack.
