Yeah, I know, the guitar solo as an artform is dead, whatever. Guitar solos rule.

My picks:
Metallica - Nothing Else Matters: this is a Hetfield rather than a Hammett, if I remember rightly, so it's obviously less flashy, but I think it works perfectly. Full of subtlety for a metal solo.

Jimi Hendrix - Hey Joe: my favourite Hendrix solo I think, again for the simplicity.

Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb: I could've chosen so many from The Wall (Mother, Another Brick...), but this one has everything. Dave Gilmour always chooses excatly the right note.

I could go on. Wot no Van Halen, for example? What about you, kids?

Kinda playing the amp more than the guitar on that one. Cool. Interesting use of the wa wa as more of a tone shaper than the traditional method, too.

Is that the one that sounds like lead guitar in Wave Of Mutilation (UK Surf)?!

I wouldn't even have started the topic if I knew there were Bush Ass Kissers here as I don't even want to hear there "outrage" and comments at all because I have heard them and they are all wrong.

Listen to the solo in I'm Set Free then Havalina, it's almost uncanny.

I like Bob Mould's solo on 'Celebrated Summer'. Also, on Bowie's 'Moonage Daydream', Mick Ronson treats us to a fantastic solo.

i generally agree, minus SRV. He's pretty fantastic in my eyes.

Funny that this topic comes up- I was just driving home listening to the local classic rock station and they played Heart's "Magic Man". I'm not a huge Heart fan, but the solo in that song is so cool, creepy, backwards, and perfect, and the tone is so original, I'd have to say that's a great solo.

Right after that they played Chicago's "25 or 6 to 4". I guess Terry Kath was one of Hendrix's favorite guitarists, but the solo in this song is a complete whack fest. The shittiest guitar solo ever. It had to be said.

Gilmore, Gibbons, Zappa, Nuge, Walsh, Baxter, May, Workman, Rhodes, =vh=, Atkins, Slash, the original Cake guy, Tom Morello, Adam Jones, all interesting, smart soloists.

SRV, Clapton, Blackmore, Allman, Dime, Hammett, Yngwie, Vai, Satch, Page, Beck, Green, Trower, yaaaaawwwwnnnnnn. No fireworks for me for some reason.

This choice isn't hip at all, but neither are guitar solos:

"Tripping on a Hole in a Paper Heart" - Stone Temple Pilots, soloist - Dean DeLeo

I love that solo. Thatīs my favourite of their records, the trebly guitar makes it for me.

I've always really dug Paul McCartney's guitar solo on TAXMAN. Simple, quick, but so "where the hell did he come up with that?"

Why, thank you.

I never hear mention of Bob1's guitar prowess but listen to any pre-Freedom of Choice Devo, especially the Hardcore comps. The guy's great.

Frenetic Dinosaur Jr ones like "How'd You Pin That One On Me" or majestic tunnel ones like on "Keep The Glove" or "They Always Come". I also like a lot of Billy Corgan's ones. I also like ones you can sing, like the one on "Something" or the one on "Severed Lips".

Oops... Seems we're having all this discussion for nothing. Jon Spencer did write the liner notes from this CD, but the quote I'm referring to is not by him, it's by the guy who made the comp (from Rough Trade I guess) called Mick Petts, and he says: "Just to let you know for a record to stake a claim for 'authentic rock and rollness', at least half of the tracks must contain guitar solos. It's over 70% on this baby."
And I stand by it!

Richard Hell and the Voidoids(Robert Quine) - Love Comes in Spurts

I'm pretty sure it's Quine doing this solo, but I think I might have read somewhere that it's actually Ivan Julian.

I love Alex Turner's solo in the beginning of The Arctic Monkeys' song I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor.
I wouldn't say it's the best, though.

I like a lot of Kirk Hammet's solos. Jane's Addiction's Dave Navarro shreds out a wonderful jazzy lead on Been Caught Stealing.

Brokenface, I remember reading that it's actually Brian Bell soloing on "Why Bother?" I'll have to look into that, fact check it.

I think Joey Santiago's solo on "Hey" is at the top of the pile when it comes to fantastic guitar solos.

All the leads in "and your bird can sing" by the Beatles are marvelous.

Steve Malkmus has a great solo in that song "Church on White" from his first solo record.

Dean Ween's guitar work on "Buckingham Green" is so fuckin' brown!

Three Imaginary Boys - The Cure: This one is really simple, but I love it, the sound of the guitar is... it gives me the thrills each time I hear it.

Tommy the Cat - Primus & Wynona's Big Brown Beaver - Primus: Talking about perfection? these ones are good examples.
