Posted - 06/29/2006 : 16:54:26 Great links....
I know it isn't new but I just caught Iconoclasts (Michael Stipe and Mario Batali). I think it was the travel channel of all things. Anyone else see it? I still laugh when I remember the ending with Michael and Mario singing "It's a Beautiful Day" backstage at a U2 concert. Um....Mario could of perhaps saved us and not have sang.

Posted - 06/28/2006 : 11:47:44 I didn't like 'Reveal' at all. The weakest R.E.M. record, in my opinion.

I saw that going real cheap in HMV last week, and was thinking of picking it up. I really lost interest around the time of Reveal, which I have, but only listen to once!!

Posted - 06/28/2006 : 09:31:26 Remembering early REM always takes me back to Fort Jackson, South Carolina, where I was in late 83 into early 84. Everybody knows about the “total control” environment of army basic training, but much worse for me was my AIT (Advanced Individual Training) at Fort Jackson. Whenever I imagine what prison must be like, I think of something beyond Fort Jackson, easily the worst extended experience of my life. One of the few respites was the radio, preferably out of the nearby University of South Carolina, on headphones late at night in one’s bunk, at that time featuring heavy doses of REM, especially “Radio Free Europe”. After about a month of the total control we got an off-post pass, and a group of us made a beeline to local mall record stores. I bought cassettes of “Murmur”, X’s “Los Angeles”, the B-52s’ “Whammy”, a Velvet Underground compilation, and something else, Wall of Voodoo I think. Of couse we did the obligatory drinking and even scored a couple doobies, despite the constant threat of piss tests, from the local entrepreneurs that serve military populations everywhere. The doobies were critical, since it had been weeks and we were quite primed synaptically. I vividly remember that night, back in my bunk, still stoned, where the first cassette I played was “Murmur”, heard completely for the first time. I was transported beyond the army and, as I was later to realize, beyond time.

Gutted.
The radio just played Orange Crush and when I compare it to the new stuff, it's just, meh!

Posted - 06/28/2006 : 06:30:07 "Around the sun" is on my car again this week. Did you give it a chance, kitty? I think it's actually quite good. Not as good as most of their early works, of course, but it didn't deserve all the bad critics.
PS: Great links, Carl! You're always surfing youtube, aren't you?
