There has been a lot of controversy surrounding this film since it won the Palme d’Or at Cannes this year. And with its imminent theatrical release on the 23rd of June, I’d like to hear peoples opinions on it.
For those who haven’t heard of it, here is a description of the movie:
“Ireland 1919: workers from field and country unite to form volunteer guerrilla armies to face the ruthless 'Black and Tan' squads that are being shipped from Britain to block Ireland's bid for independence. Driven by a deep sense of duty and a love for his country, Damien abandons his burgeoning career as a doctor and joins his brother, Teddy, in a dangerous and violent fight for freedom. As the freedom fighters' bold tactics bring the British to breaking point, both sides finally agree to a treaty to end the bloodshed. But despite the apparent victory, civil war erupts and families who fought side by side find themselves pitted against one another as sworn enemies, putting their loyalties to the ultimate test.”

I’d like to point out that this movie is made by critically acclaimed director Ken Loach. A British director making a movie that has been claimed to be ‘pro IRA’, this has got a lot of British newspapers riled,calling Loach a Nazi and comparing him to Hitler. Loach pointed out that the majority of the people slating him haven’t even seen the film, and are only going on hearsay and gossip.
Some say the film is blatantly ‘anti-British’, while others say it’s just a film based on historical events (characters within the film are fictional).
Personally, I get the feeling that the journalists damning the movie can’t seem to differentiate between the Britain and Ireland of then, with the Britain and Ireland of now. Those were different times, different situations, with different ideals, for both countries. I know some people fear that the movie might damage Britain’s image, but like I said, it was a completely different country back then.
Obviously no one can comment on the film as of yet, it‘s not out for another two weeks or so.
But, I’d like to hear people views on the medias portrayal of Ken Loach as well as the film. I’d also like to hear peoples opinions on the comparisons drawn to the war in Iraq.

Or how about "Barney's Big Shake-up?" A cute, albeit annoying, adventure in which everyone’s second favourite neon dinosaur causes a ruckus when he abuses a child placed under his supervision, live on television. Controversy arises when Butkus Samuelson, the man in the Barney suit, manages to cheat the system by pointing out the distinct disparity between the actions of Butkus Samuelson, and that of Barney the Dinosaur. "Copycat" child rapists crop up all over the country, and get away scot-free, owing to their forethoughtful precaution of hiring a superhero costume prior to the to event rape taking place. Certificate U. |

It's actually a CGI kiddies movie about these rabbits, one of which is called Wind and the other is called Barley. They have an abusive sexual relationship. It features hardcore rabbitery and swearing. It's a tragic tail (see what i did) of lust and violence. And it's PG!!!!
(P.S. watch out for the scene where Barley seduces a hedgehog only to have Wind cut out his larynx in a jealous rage. Ahhh how Disney has changed)
