Posted - 06/07/2006 : 00:26:44 I know we're not supposed to do this. Bought a bunch of stuff yesterday, though not what I expected to (I wanted the new Sonic Youth, Danielson, Mecca Normal, Carla Bozulich and Daniel Johnston, but they were all too expensive or unavailable). Instead I got a couple of secondhand stuff: * Clor - Clor: Tre hooked me on them last year, it's a good record indeed. * Magnapop - Hot Boxing: one of my fave indie records of the 90's and for some reason I didn't have it on CD. Produced by Bob Mould. * The Amps - Tipp City ep * Jonny Polonsky - There Is Something Wrong With You ep * François K - Deep Space NYC vol.1 : house/dub/minimal techno mix, the tracklisting looked great. * Danielson - Dry Goods Dry Power 7" & When It Comes To You I'm Lazy 7" eps.

Posted - 06/10/2006 : 02:43:07 The Milk Of Human Kindness is just great, Dan Snaith is a genius. I recommend Manitoba's Up In Flames equally. The Books one I haven't listened to sufficiently yet, but I like what I've heard. On first listening, it sounds a lot more Prefuse73 than Books, but as I say, needs more listening. I've only recently the Books, and I'm loving their work.
Yesterday I bought the Tropicalia album (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000BM7UBY/qid=1149932471/sr=8-1/ref=pd_ka_1/202-6848734-0569410) as recommended by Brian, although I've not listened to it yet. Also, a cheap-ish boxset of world music for my project, featuring music from all the countries in the world cup (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000FG4KMS/o/qid=1149932512/sr=2-1/ref=sr_bt_1/202-6848734-0569410). I'm usually wary of 3CD sets this price, but this looks like a decent listing - England's entry is Richard Thompson, which is a good start.

Posted - 06/10/2006 : 02:26:58 What are the reworkings of the Books like Simon? I quite like the Books. I bought Caribou's the Milk of Human Kindness the other day, partly because of the review you did for it, and having heard 'Yeti', which I like a lot.
Recently I bought Tom Waits' Real Gone which I've wanted for a while, and Sonic Youth - Murray Street. I like Murray Street, but as like most Sonic Youth, I tend to get a little bored listening to it. I saw them live once and for a good twenty minutes all that happened was Thurston rubbing his guitar on an amp. I'd left before he finished, but apparently that's all they did until the end, so I didn't miss much.

Posted - 06/07/2006 : 13:36:38 I've gone crazy on the work of Nathan Johnson. I saw the movie BRICK, of which he did the score, and i went out and got everything he's ever done. I've only really absorbed the BRICK score so far, and it's great. Really interesting, yest accessible.

Posted - 06/07/2006 : 01:09:49 "Hot Boxing" is excellent. Punk-pop at its best. They're from Athens, GA, and friends with both Mould and Michael Stipe. They toured with Sugar in 1992 and did a gig at a French festival with Sugar, Pavement and Sonic Youth. That must've been quite amazing (and amazingly loud).
Glad to see you've been checking out the new Mecca Normal CD. I heard a couple of tracks on their myspace page and it sounds very good. And yeah, the Bozulich stuff is all my fault, I'm constantly raving about her. Her new album is quite different from the alt.country stuff I've put on my mixes, it's experimental stuff released on Constellation and recorded with guys from Silver Mount Zion.

Posted - 06/07/2006 : 00:55:31 oh, I keep meaning to look into the Magnapop CD - I knew Bob Mould had something to do with them, but didn't really know what. They were kind of on my todo list. I've got one track from the new Mecca Normal CD which is pretty good with an insanely long title.
And are you the reason that I have three Carla Bozulich tracks on my PC? I knew someone from here had extolled her virtues, I just didn't know who.
