Apple wants $250 to replace my battery, but this guy says it can be a while lot cheaper:

http://www.notpopular.com/blog/comments.php?blogID=63

Despite the obvious consequence of spending $100 on a part for nothing, does there appear to be any real downside to trying this? Does anyone know anyone who's done this? I'm a bit skeptical, but also think it's probably worth a try...

Yes, I did, they were all very drunk, as were you. You should, it's like £60 return flights at the moment.

Hey bbb2, you were in Berlin recently? What for, how long, where, etc,...? Since I'm there all the time, I'm a bit curious.

More on topic: thanks to this thread I'm thinking about opening my broken 2nd gen ipod that sadly didn't survive a clubnight last winter and now spends his days as a paperweight on my desk. Maybe there is still hope?

I was going to ask if anyone was there and could recommend anything, but didn't think anyone was... Was there for 5 days, went last year too but on more of a boys drinking hol. This time saw the sights as well as drinking. Went to a club at Sophienclub on Tuesday, an indie night? Was quite good, played some stuff I wasn't expecting (such as Spinto Band). Went to the Sci-fi themed bar too, Astro Bar. Spent a lot of time on oranienburger, in zapata and that bar next door (I forget its name!)

i'm with homer - iriver all the way!
i've had mine for about 17 months now and it's just the bees knees....not a single problem and the battery lasts for as long as when i bought it, which is ages!....and there is no way i could now live without it.
but i'm expecting it to die a premature death because i use it every day at work which is dusty as fuck, hot as hell and just about the worst enviornment i can think of for a piece of electrical equipment, but it ain't given up the ghost yet...

i also think the "extras" you can now get with mp3 players are a waste of time. i want my mp3 player to play music and nothing more. i don't want to look at photos or read text or watch videos on that tiny screen for gods sake. thats wh i've got a computer and tv for! and the bigger the better...my 40GB is feeling smaller and smaller all the time.me want more!

all i can say, thank god for polio! brian

I was going to write something about the priceless value of a lesson learnt. But then I saw you went and bought another! No lesson need be worth two Ipods!

I think a lot of people do, Doog. Mine I bought over the Zen because there was nothing else that could do what I wanted with my camera when I was in Europe for a long time. But I now love the interface and am hooked. I don't care about looking hip or cute or whatever, just that what I'm using does what I want and does it well. My iPod is only a year old but no problems yet. We'll see if that remains the case this time next year or in two years.

Ack, fuck Ipods. Why in the name of hell do people buy them when they know they're just gonna die within a year? Because they're cute and fashionable? Fuck that noise.

I've got a 30GB video ipod. The novelty of watching a video wore off after about 40 seconds. It's good to have a decent amout of memory though.

i don't want it for the video, i want the extra 20 gigs of space.

As for where i get the money, its called credit card debt!

And as for the jukebox, i'm still working on it. I didn't get a 'no' but i didn't get a 'yes' either. We'll see...

Selling old/damaged iPods on eBay. :)

I've only had one iPod and so far have seen nothing that makes me want a video iPod or to upgrade. I'd never use the video anyway.

Tht was indeed the cable - it disconnected from the outer metal shell. i was able to get it back snugly, but still...

OK, good. Yeah, swap out the hard drive then... plug and pray as they say. Hopefully you didn't disconnect THIS cable:

I've restored it many, many times. It's dead - it's been dead for almost a year. I've been trying everything but replacing the HD since then.

Cult_Of_Frank Posted - 05/10/2006 : 10:01:33
You sure it's a hard drive thing? It's possible that the table got corrupted or something. Did you try a restore on it? It looks like I'm too late, but presumably you haven't ordered a new microdrive yet?

...and i may have just fucked up...

While removing the old HD, one of the ribbons came loose. I put it back in, but i have notoriously bad luck w/ ribbon stuff.

Boo...

It can be done no problem. If the worst that can happen is you utterly destroy your iPod, it's still as cheap to buy a new one as it would've been to send the iPod to Apple in the first place. My iPod is one of the few things I've actually bought the extended warranty for. Basically, I take it in after the battery stops holding much charge and get a new one for the $70 I paid. At least, I hope so. If not, you'll hear about it. :)
