Last Saturday I bought Danielson's "I'm Slow But I'm Sloppy" 7" ep. They changed once more the name of the band, it's just Danielson now, although the whole family still plays on the album that's released next week called "Ships". And in addition to the album, they released 3 7" eps limited to 1500 copies on 3 different labels. The one I got is on Anticon, which seems quite strange for a Danielson record. Side A is produced by Chris Palladino (of the Famile) and side B is produced by Why? (from Anticon). And I was very pleasantly surprised, it seems the new songs are much more ambitious in terms of production and instrumentation (but still with Daniel Smith's crazy singing and awesome songwriting), there's an amazing xylophone part on side A and trumpet sampling on side B. Both songs are excellent and I'm impatient for the album to come out. The other 2 eps are released on Sounds Familyre and Kill Rock Stars but I haven't found them yet.

i saw danielson in aug. of 05'at the purpledoor fest.he was going by brother danielson that day. he was accompanied on stage by his wife and 6? year old daughter. i was familiar with him and his music, but some of the crowd weren't sure what to make of him. when he got out his props thats when some of the younger kids decided to stick around and see what this guy was all about. well he put on his love blinders (see his website), and with his falsetto style of singing, this was just too much for a young kid behind me.he began mimicking him and singing along in a high pitched voice. at first brother d. ignored him but it got to be impossible.i guess even love blinders have there limits because about the time i was going to turn around and stare at the perpetrator brother d. stopped in the middle of the song. it seemed like he was looking right at me when he said "do you like the way i sing?...........if you want to sing wait until the chorus at the end and join in". he wasn't to happy , and i thought he felt i was responsible. either way i'm afraid i go see him because he might remember me. anyway ,sorry for the rambling ,i think the new "ships" cd is great. he reminds me of a modern day steve taylor (showing my age here), for indie kids.

My Daniel Smith autograph says "Denis the Lord loves you". I thought that was cool, even if I'm an atheist.

Yeah you're right, that was stupid. I just can't get past the Christian thing. And the matching uniforms. It bothers me, but that's my issue more than his (or theirs). I apoligize.

I saw them live about 8 years ago at a Christian music festival in Pennsylvania. Good stuff. They played on a small side stage and there was hardly anyone there to see it. They still dressing in nurse outfits? ha. I need to get some of their stuff.

Daniel Smith is certainly not autistic or retarded. I have interviewed him and he is a nice, friendly guy. The band members are Christians, but why does that make them a sideshow act? Are the Beastie Boys a sideshow act becaues they are Jewish? Or is Beck because he is a Scientologist?

Kind of a sideshow act. Nice songs, very catchy, but the lead singer (I hear) is either autistic or reatded, and I hear the whole family is evangelical christian.

That does indeed sound like a Unique Selling Point that just might work...

Yeah Cheese, they're great live. Whether you like their music or not, half the band is chicks dressed as nurses, what more do you need?

Danielson are playing in London next month, and there's also a film about them showing. Worth going, do you think?

Nope, haven't been to the record store yet. I know it's been released over here on monday though. Augh! Too many good records released this month, I want to get the new Carla Bozulich, a great Detroit techno comp I've been waiting for since last year, and it seems there's a new Daniel Johnston LP out too. And the new Mecca Normal album.

So i've had SHIPS now for about 5 days, but i'm only now really starting to absorb it. I like it a lot thus far. The packaging is a bit annoying (the tracklisting, etc is written in a metallic silver that under my office lights is hard to read and there are no individual song credits, just a long list of people who collaborated), but the content seems pretty solid.

Denis have you found/ordered it yet?

PS i have to miss a Danielson show on Saturday b/c i told my girlfriend i'd go to a family party. I wish it was a Famile party...

PPS i also just ordered the other two 7"s - i am SHIPS complete thus far!

You and I must have very similar record collections. Except the techno section on my side and the jazz part on yours (I do like jazz a lot but don't have many CDs).

I have the Sounds Familyre 7", "Dry Goods, Dry Power" and "Left-handed Smoke Shifter" produced by Steve Albini and featuring Deerhoof. I need a few more spins to really get an opinion of it.

Sort of off topic, but i wish all labels do what Merge does with some releases, which is if you buy the vinyl you get a free digital download of the mp3s. Because my office doesn't have a turntable.
