On a whim, I picked up a big boxset of Alfred Hitchcock's works. I've actually never seen a Hitchcock movie, only a few episodes of his tv show when I was too young to appreciate it anyway, but I've been looking for North by Northwest for ages and there it was. Or so I thought... there were two sets and I took the one without NxNW, which is frustrating since that movie alone was the impetus for buying.
It does have some classics though, and some I've not heard of: Rear Window, Psycho, Vertigo, The Man Who Knew Too Much on the former list and Shadow of a Doubt, Saboteur, Rope, The Birds, Marnie, Torn Curtain, Topaz, The Trouble With Harry, Frenzy, and Family Plot on the latter (sorry film buffs).
What movies am I missing aside from NxNW? Where should I start my foray? Is there anything I should be careful to note? Other fans offended by my lack of knowledge thus far?

Did you know that The Birds was filmed at Bodega Bay in Northern California?

I love Hitchcock's work. About ten years ago I was fortunate to see Dial M for Murder in a theater in glorious 3D. It was polarized 3D, not the red/blue crap. See it if you get the chance.
Also I recently bought the first season of Alfred Hitchcock Presents on DVD and gave it to my mom for her birthday. If she ever gets done with it, I'm gonna borrow it from her, grab a few six-packs of Stone Ale and become a lard ass for a weekend. |

It's not a great Hitchcock film, but it's a personal favorite...THE MAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH (1956)...the tag-line ending is one of the most hilarious scenes in any movie ever. James Stewart was such an amazing guy. I luckily got to meet him once.

That might be a good idea, Dean, kind of a saving-the-best-for-last thing...although, seeing as I haven't seen Half of Hitch's movies, I can't claim that's his best!!

Actually, come to think of it, we did see Psycho in grade 7, so that's a lie. I remember the teacher telling us it was chocolate syrup and me thinking that a woman in the shower with chocolate syrup all over her was probably something I shouldn't tell the parents I'd been watching in school. So yeah, pretty uncultured. :)
I'm really excited to see Rear Window. All my knowledge of Hitchcock comes from The Simpsons and other pop culture references. Oh, and when I was 12 we were in Florida and there was a Hitchcock museum that I remember nothing about except my uncle laid on a stool holding onto a merry-go-round and did some bluescreen stuff.
I'm thinking maybe save Rear Window for last among the lot. Don't know which one to start with. I'll add Notorious to my list (so far containing North by Northwest) or Hitchcock must-sees.

He has a lot of earlier films. I think Lifeboat has just been released on DVD...yeah, there's probably a good few not in that set. But then a lot of early Hitchhock probably hasn't been released, at least not in a digital format.
Ia ctually haven't seen that many Hitchcock movies myself, actually. Psycho, The Birds, Rear Window, Vertigo. I think that's it. As great as Psycho is, Rear Window is absolutely engrossing and engaging. I remember watching that with my family when I was small, on a Saturday night or something. Loved it.

Not a big fan of Hitch, but I love "Psycho" and "Vertigo". In my opinion most of his other movies, though technically interesting, are overrated.

Psycho is pretty much a perfect film. Everything works.
Oh, and Notorious is a great one you're missing.

ouch. you've never seen a hitchcock movie? you've never heard of The Birds? that's... unusual. Do you live under a rock?
I'm far from being an expert myself. But from your list I love Rear Window, Psycho, Vertigo, The Birds, NxNW. Saboteur was good, The Man Who Knew Too Much was ok but I wouldn't rank it among my faves, and Torn Curtain was so-so. Couple of really silly moments in it. I don't think I've seen the other ones.
Anyway, you're in for a treat.
