coming to the end of my 2nd year of the phd journey, glad to see that people do actually come out the other end alive. Going thru my disillusioned stage now :(

yes yes thesis was in english. poor english, but still. it was part of an international project, so it was quite natural to do it like that.

heck, here is the abstract !

Abstract
The Eastern Alps and their relation to the neighbouring tectonic provinces (Bohemian Massif,
Pannonian Domain, Southern Alps/Dinarides) record a complicated orogeny, which started
approximately 130 million years ago. Recently, an unprecedented series of large-scale seismic
experiments were carried out to provide new insight into the structure of the crust and
uppermost mantle of the earth in Central Europe.
This thesis introduces a 3D seismic model for the eastern part of the Eastern Alps and their
surroundings based on data from those experiments. A new approach for processing 3D
WAR/R data is presented. The method aims to increase the signal to-noise (S/N) ratio and is
based on stacking of the seismic traces in the time-offset domain. For the application to 3D
WAR/R data new algorithms were implemented for stacking and in particular, for the
inversion of these stacked data.
A 3D model of the P-wave velocity of the crust has been calculated by inversion of the
stacked data. Further, a velocity map of uppermost mantle and maps of the crust – mantle
boundary have been compiled. These models are compared to models derived by traditional
3D inversion methods based on travel times obtained from single-fold traces.
The comparison as well as other analyses show that the models based on stacked data are
robust and provide an improved coverage compared to models based on travel times from
single-fold traces, but they have a relatively low resolution, particularly near the surface.
Models from both approaches are combined in order to benefit from the advantages of both
representations of the data.
The results correlate with geological structures and show new prominent features in the
Eastern Alps and their surroundings. The velocity distribution in the crust varies significantly.
It correlates with tectonic units on different scales and provides new images at mid and lower
crustal levels. The Moho depth varies strongly in the range between 24 km in the western
Pannonian Domain to 51 km in the central part of the Eastern Alps. The crustal structure in
the investigated area appears to be fragmented into four distinctive parts, and the new
fragment “Pannonia” is introduced. Its existence may be an important factor for a better
understanding of the geodynamic history of the Eastern Alps.

uhm, thank you all.

title of the thesis is "accuracy & resolution of a 3D seismic model of the eastern alps" and it deals with a new geophysical model of the eastern alps.

and here is the first page with the introductional quote:

now how cool is that ???
