I enjoyed AofE. It's very different than Civ, requiring some quick clicking. But in that genre, I think Starcraft was better. Damn that was a great game. I was never particularly good at it, but it was fun (and time consuming).
Anyone try Heart of Iron (the WW II simulation where you can play any nation or maybe it's just European theater)? I don't know if I currently have a new enough OS to run it, but it sounds awesome. Probably too awesome. Goodbye family and productivity. I'll probably avoid it. |

Mislead, you very well could be. :P I find that people a little newer to PC gaming tend not to have the patience for it, just wondering if you fit in that category. I enjoyed AOE too, but I was already tiring of that genre when it came out. I never bothered with the second/third, so nothing to offer you there. Likewise, I've heard Fear is very good, but I'm just so tired of shooters right now that I probably wouldn't even check out Duke Nukem Forever if it came out.

Am I the only one who doesn't really enjoy Civilisation? (The game, that is)
I really like Age of Empires II and Rise of Nations. Have considered AoE III but I've heard bad things, especially for lower end PCs. Any experienced, wise words?

Yeah, Colonization was a lot of fun and is definitely underrated. I haven't played that game in ages but I remember it being great. Maybe I still have it kicking around somewhere...

I'm going to say my favourite is Colonization, for some reason I can spend days at a time on that. They should make a new version. Plus, it has pirates (privateers, at least).

I liked Civ3 the most. With the added culture, the more balanced battle system, the special units (,ok. even the little animations...).
When I think of all the hours I spent playing those Sid Meier games... So often all you wanted to do was see what happened after the "last" save... and then the sun came up all of a sudden.
And I, too, never really got into Alpha Centauri. Like Dean I had difficulties to "get" the research tree and actually control things. Didn't try too hard, though. My former flatmate played it like crazy.
And Dean, regarding the Pirates! story, maybe I should have added a smiley to make the irony a little more obvious. But here you go:  |

I third it. Meier really knew hot to steal time. Nothing like sailing a blood thirsty sloop to catch up an opulent cargo ship or to wear out a frigate buzzing around and stinging it and then take it with the sword... eh, born in the wrong century!
The original Civ is still the greatest, IMO. Probably the modest graphics leave more to the imagination, fueled by a great plot.

Heh, no, I don't think there's much good in that story unless you're familiar with the game, but thanks.
I too have played all those games. I also have Alpha Centauri, which kind of disappointed me. I thought the tech tree was inspired but too difficult to really understand where the research might take your civilization. Still a great game, but I prefered Civ.

As for the new Pirates!, I may end up borrowing it from my brother someday. I am still a bit sceptical about confronting this trasured memory of mine with a modern graphic version of it, though.
Hey, and your story seems to be an ideal candidate for the forum eBook, don't you think? It's as "on the road" as it gets and I'm sure when you search hard enough one can even find the FB inspiration behind it all. |

Kelladwella, the new game is great, really enjoyed it. I played the old one too, back in the day, but this one was just as fun and felt fresh even if the gameplay hasn't changed. Sid Meier can do no wrong.
I actually so loved the game I wound up writing a sweeping plot of an entire game in a post I now sort of regret as it makes me feel like an even bigger geek than I like to consider myself:

I really, REALLY loved Sid Meyer's Pirates back in the days. Never checked out the new game that came out last year or so. |
