If you haven't seen it yet, and if the simpsons have been disappointing you since 1999, save yourself 87 minutes and go for a walk instead

"Spider Pig" from The Simpsons Movie will make an appearance in the first episode of the new season. There was a scene with the loveable pig at the end of the movie that got cut, but it will most likely make it onto the DVD. |

coastline, it sounds like you've never really watched the simpsons? you're missing out. i haven't watched it in ages but recently i've been watching some of the early season re-rus on channel 4. i'd forgotten how great it used to be.

To sum up, I found in amusing enough because I didn't go in expecting to see an amazing Simpsons episode on par with the program I used to love more than anything. I just went to watch a cartoon. The story seemed a little pointless in terms of certain strands seemed to go nowhere for no good reason, Bart and Lisas storys are utterly pointless really. I went home chose a random episode from one of the first 9 seasons and laughed more in 20mins than I did in 1h20mins.

It really didn't quite work as a movie. It certainly had it's share of funny lines and slapstick moments, no doubt about that. I reckon it's better if you just view it as a kind of very stylish, elongated TV special episode.

Here I go with my hyperbole again, but I saw it last night and thought it was the funniest movie I've seen in my entire life. I'll probably watch it again, just to catch all the stuff I think I missed the first time. Granted, I didn't go into this thing with huge expectations. Reading the top of this thread, it sounds like a lot of hard-core fans burned out on the Simpsons a long time ago, and are expecting the movie to either save their faith in the show or confirm for them that it has died. Me, I just went into the theater looking for somewhere air-conditioned to take the family for a couple hours, and while I was there I saw a hilarious movie. There was a ton of laughter in the theater throughout the movie. And it was one of those bizarre situations where people applauded at the end. Second movie in a row where that's happened.
Oh, and the weirdest thing. In the credits, there was this giant stretch of Korean names -- maybe 100 of them in a row -- in all the post-production credits. I couldn't figure out if it was supposed to be a joke or something.
There's a perfect explanation for the shit that I've been in. As soon as I find out, I'll let you know. |

7-11 is signing deals with some major movie studios this year to promote The Simpsons, Spider-Man 3 and Fantastic Four!
If you are a Simpsons fan, this may be your one and only chance to actually be a consumer at a real-life Kwik-E-Mart. Eleven 7-11 stores across the US will be fitted to look just like the one from Springfield in celebration of the movie opening July 27th. No word if they will be hiring any Apu look-a-likes.
Here's what the Richmond Times Dispatch had to say,
It appears as though the world's largest convenience store will get Simpsonized, though 7-Eleven Inc. said the deal isn't done yet.
But at a company event yesterday in Richmond, officials showcased their planned promotional ef- forts with major upcoming films, including "The Simpsons Movie."
If all goes as planned, the convenience store chain plans to refit 11 stores across the U.S. -- Richmond is an unlikely choice -- to resemble the front of the Kwik-E-Mart, the convenience store that Homer and other characters frequent in the classic cartoon TV series.
Customers also will be able to buy products inspired by the nearly two-decades-old show, including KrustyO's cereal, Buzz Cola and iced Squishees (the cup says Squishee, but the contents will be Slurpee).
The chain also will use pictures of Simpsons characters to promote 7-Eleven's line of fresh foods, such as placing the face of Homer and his classic "Mmmm . . . sandwich" quip on sandwich wrappers.
Details of 7-Eleven's plans were showed to employees in a booth at a company event at the Greater Richmond Convention Center. It was unclear yesterday which 11 stores of the more than 4,700 nationwide would receive a cartoony facelift or sell inventory of the Simpsons-inspired products.
The movie hits theaters July 27.
7-Eleven also is lining up deals with the "Spider-Man" franchise in advance of the third installment in May. The promotion will feature Black Cherry Lemonade Slurpees and collectible Slurpee cups with three-dimensional graphics on the side.
Finally, the retailer plans to use the June sequel to "Fantastic Four" to promote the Slurpee energy drink it launched last year, called Full Throttle.
Spokeswoman Margaret Chabris said contracts on the promotions have not been signed with movie studios. She didn't give any further details, saying the company will release more information in coming weeks.
"We've done research, and research shows us that our customers like . . . movies, so we're getting involved with some major studios on some of their properties this summer," she said.

Saw it yesterday, it was pretty funny, some real zinger lines. A little bit disappointing, but then my expectations were probably too high. I mainly concentrates on the Simpson family, could have had more involvement from the secondary characters. |

Fabio would actually be a great guest star. They could parody him getting hit in the face by the goose, or whatever, on the roller coaster. That show hasn't jumped the shark, it IS the shark (I'm not sure what that means, I'm just trying to say it sucks). Brian, your 3 wheel analogy is spot on. I thought they hit a low when Brintey Spears was the guest voice, but thanks to K-Fed, they have new depths to discover. Hey, he was good enough for CSI.

When i was in Saskatoon, Dean and i had a long Simpsons discussion, where i pretty much said that the Simpsons jumped the shark when every week's scenario was one in which they would move/Homer would change jobs/characters would do insane stuff, and then next week, it'd be as if nothing ever happened. Granted, it always happened a few episdoes a season, but when it became the real focus of the show, i lost total interest. The trailer looks terrible. I really wish they'd have quit after season 10 as the greatest show of all time.
I have a theory of how the Simpsons are written now, and it involves three wheels:
1 - The Character Wheel
2 - The Wacky Sitation Wheel
3 - The Guest Star Wheel
Let's give them a spin!

man, that tailer sucked. and for every reason why i hate the show for the past 8 seasons: reliance on sight gags. slapstick. how is that stuff funny? the simpsons WAS funny because it was clever and smart. now homer just yells and falls down. fucking lame.
fuck the simpsons.
for half of its existence it was the best show ever. for the other half it is the worst. fuck this shit. i bet it will be the first movie i walk out of (of course i have to see it...)

I've seen a trailer for it, and it looked terrible. The simpsons should have finished up years ago. It's like being with a friend who used to be really funny and cool, but has just grated on your nerves over the years.

The trailer alone shows how terrible it is going to be. The first 9 (1/2 aside) seasons were in part brilliant due to the fact it was realistic. They lost that and now rely heavily on all the things they couldn't years ago. It'll be in short, awful.

The makers of The Simpsons know they've been sucking recently, but they're smart guys so I just can't bet against them putting out an ass kicking film that silences their critics. If the film is amazing, then I think they should just wrap things up there, but if it sucks it won't matter too much if they keep making rubbish until 2081 just for the cash. |

IGN Interview: The Simpsons's Al Jean
We talk to the writer/producer about what's to come in season 18 and in The Simpsons Movie.

September 1, 2006 - While most casual Simpsons fans know the name of creator Matt Groening, Al Jean is also an integral part of the show who deserves a lot of credit for contributing to the series through the years. Jean was with the series right from the start, serving as a co-producer and writer in the early days before being elevated to showrunner for the show's third and fourth season.
Jean then co-created the animated series The Critic with frequent collaborator and fellow Simpsons writer Mike Reiss, and after that series ended, returned to The Simpsons in a full time capacity, where he is currently once again executive producer and showrunner. As The Simpsons is about to begin a remarkable 18th season on the air, we caught up with Jean to discuss the ongoing popularity of the series, and what's to come this year both on the show and in 2007's long-awaited Simpsons Movie.
IGN TV: I'm sure you get asked this a lot, but could you imagine this show would go this long at the beginning?
Al Jean: No, I was hoping for five years. I mean I'd worked on Alf, and that ran four [years]. And here we are. But now I don't even know. You know, I'm very sure they'll be a 19th season, and then I don't know. Still, the numbers are good.
IGN TV: It must be gratifying to you guys to see the fan base grow. There's literally generations now of people who love it now for different reasons.
Jean: There's generations that have been raised watching The Simpsons, which is really scary.
IGN TV: When you write it, is it in your mind that there are kids watching it, but there are also of course adults watching, who will appreciate different things?
Jean: Well, from the beginning, we've always written it for adults and for ourselves. Putting in humor that we thought people that were like us would enjoy. We assumed that kids would watch it regardless, because it was animated. And there's a small condescension to the kids where we wouldn't show Bart, like, using a chainsaw; how to do that. They might imitate it. But other then that, we write it for adults.
IGN TV: With the DVD sets, what's it like for you to go back and look at the old episodes?
Jean: I do some of the commentaries, and it's fascinating because I really haven't seen these things in ten, fifteen years. Generally I really enjoy watching them again, and it's kind of like a reunion to see some of the people that I worked with before, so it's a really pleasant experience.
IGN TV: Working on it for so long, is it fairly stress free since you've been doing it so long and you kind of have a rhythm to it? Or is there still pressure, because since it's been on so long, you want to make sure the work is still good?
Jean: It's never stress free doing a comedy. There's always a lot of pressure. But we have a great staff and we know what we're trying to do, and as an audience therefore, it's as good as it can get.
IGN TV: Why do you think it's resonated this much and had such lasting power?
Jean: I think one reason is that it's about a family and so it's something that appeals to almost everybody. Everyone comes from a family of one kind or another and we're depicting kind of a crummy family, and most people come from a crummy family in one way or another. And then I think there's a factor which I would call the Rewrite Factor; we do the show in stages, where we record it and then it comes back a few months later and we rewrite it and we do it again a few months later. And I think that gives you a lot of perspective and lets you really edit the show and make it as good as it can get, because you get this distance on it, that you don't have when you do a show on a week to week basis.
IGN TV: Is there a character you have particular affection for or like writing for?
Jean: I've always liked writing for Lisa and for Comic Book Guy.
IGN TV: Maybe you can do a big Lisa/Comic Book Guy adventure episode.
Jean: We should! That would be my ideal episode.
IGN TV: What's it like when something hits in the popular culture, like Comic Book Guy and his, "Worst blank ever."
Jean: It's insane. That he's a character that people know and that that phrase is a popular phrase is beyond belief to me.
IGN TV: There's so much funny and interesting merchandising now…
Jean: Oh yeah.
IGN TV: Even Monopoly games and things like that…
Jean: Well seeing little scenes from the show depicted that I never thought they would turn into toys, that's pretty amazing to me too.
IGN TV: Every year you do the "Treehouse of Horror" episode. How long does that take from conception to when it airs? Is it about a year?
Jean: That one we usually do a year… We make it what we call a holdover. We read it; like we're going to read the 2007 "Treehouse" next week, and it's a more ambitiously animated show, so it gives the director a little more time.
IGN TV: Does everybody sort of sit around and pitch what sort of horror stories or horror movies you might want to hit on in that episode?
Jean: Yeah. We do some parodies, we do some original plots. We're just looking for something that's quick and has a lot of visual humor and is a little bit scary.
IGN TV: You mentioned Comic Book Guy and the show has had a lot of periphery characters that have grown over the years. Is it fun when you get a chance to spotlight one of them and bring them to the forefront?
Jean: Oh, it's really fun. I mean one of the reasons the show has lasted this long is that we can take these minor characters, like Mo; we have a great episode upcoming where he becomes a poet and then he meets Tom Wolfe, the author, and Michael Chabon and Jonathan Franzen and Gore Vidal. You know, it's great just to explore somebody like that.
IGN TV: Any episodes this season you're particularly looking forward to and we should be on the lookout for?
Jean: There's a lot of great ones. There's one the week after the premiere where Bart becomes a jazz drummer and the White Stripes have an appearance in the episode. There's a lot of great music in it. There's one after that, the week after the Halloween show, where Kiefer Sutherland plays a colonel Homer gets inducted into the army. There's the one I just mentioned with Mo, there's a show upcoming where do a satire of 24, where the Simpsons characters -- the kids at school -- have a Counter Truancy Unit. There's a lot of shows coming up I'm really excited about.
IGN TV: You have the Simpsons Movie coming up. How did that come about? We've been hearing rumors about it, probably since the show first began, but how did it come to actually happen now?
Jean: Prior to the 13th season there was a negotiation for cast that included a deal to do the movie and after that deal was made, Jim Brooks approached some of the writers, including myself, and we spent a long time thinking of the story. And then an equally long time getting a draft ready. We did a reading last year of that script and recorded it and continued to revise it since, and it's on target to come out next July.
IGN TV: Any hints on what the story of the movie is?
Jean: Well, we did show a couple of teaser clips at Comic-Con, and I think they're around if people look for them. I can tell you what's in the clips: There's an angry mob that's going to kill Homer and then you see Homer leading a pack of sled dogs across a frozen wilderness… There's two clues!
IGN TV: Any guest performers in the film you can mention?
Jean: Albert Brooks. He's great.
IGN TV: Is he playing a returning character or a new character? [Brooks has played several characters on the series, including Hank Scorpio and Brad Goodman]
Jean: I won't say… But he's in it. He's got a good part.
IGN TV: So many celebrities have done The Simpsons. How excited are they when they come in to record their part?
Jean: Very excited. Or often, we'll go to them, so it's a little trip for us, as well as a chance to meet someone we really admire.
IGN TV: What about when they see the image of themselves as a Simpsons character?
Jean: You know, we never hear back usually. Because they do the voice and the show airs a year later, so I often wonder what they think. We don't hear that much. Usually, when I have heard, it's been positive.
IGN TV: What's your favorite piece of Simpsons merchandise?
Jean: That's a good question… Well, there's a pinball machine that came out the first year that I like. And the dolls are terrific; the toys, the intricate little depictions of the characters and scenes.
IGN TV: Is there something from an episode that you wrote, either a catch phrase or a piece of merchandise, that you're blown away by?
Jean: Like I said, it's amazing to me that Comic Book Guy is… that you can buy him. I worked on the episode that Stephen Hawking guest starred in; there's a Stephen Hawking action figure! I never thought that would happen.

It's one of those shows that grows on you. I used to wonder why people watched it. My friend lent me his DVD set, and very slowly I grew to enjoy it and then love it. I am actually going through my Futurama dvds again now, I'm on the fourth season and almost done.
It's like a Frank album except that one song is 22 minutes. It gets better each time.

I have to agree with Dean, in that I'm one of the people who didn't go back to watching it after it started to go down hill, was it around the time Maude died? I don't think the new episodes hold a candle to Futurama/Family Guy/American Dad even South Park and Drawn Together. I think the movie is going to be awful and probably is just going to a vehicle for loads of guest voices in a plotless, pointless movie.
