With Frank working with Levon Helm, and me just having come out of a year-long obsession with the album Rock of Ages and Music From Big Pink and pretty much anything Band-related, I thought I'd start this to see if there are any other fans of The Band here.

Those two working together is like two parts of my musical world coming together!

I would say Robbie Robertson is the most important band member.
I mean even though I love and praise the vocals and craftmanship of the others,
he wrote all the songs on 'The Band' one of my favourite albums of all time (true, he co-wrote some of them). FB didn't sing lead on Gigantic, but he wrote the amazing chords.

George Harrison has been quoted as stating The Band was his favorite band.

I also agree that Manuel and Danko's combo is the sweetest sound but Levon's gruff is so necessary to the meat of their sound....
IMO Robbie is the least essential member.
And yes I realize he wrote most of the songs, I'm just biased that way.

Yeah, they're all good. The best bands always have a couple a lead singers.

I own The Band
which is one of the best records I know

Levon Helm has a nice voice, but I really don't agree that his voice is the best in the group
I love Danko and Manuel's voice

that's an interesting comment - do tell.

They are an aquired taste for people who are used to simple pop structure. Maybe because the people from Los Angeles are city folk and don't appreciate a country tinge.

Hmm, yeah I've heard the remaining members hate Robbie's guts to this day. And I will admit the gayest parts of TLW were Robbie's lil' Keith Richards style pink scarf and his Fender that he had bronzed before the concert (adding 10 pounds to it, but didn't it look cool!). Wrote some good tunes though.

Robertson is a revisionist pud. I dig 'em as whats-his-names backing band, but their albums don't do anything for me. The genuine basement tapes are real good.

Yeah, that's a great concert movie-and directed by Scorsese, too!

The Last Waltz is very good. Too bad Levon can't sing anymore, he had the best voice in the group.
