Sorry, Dean, this isn't about you.

I think a lot about cults these days because I'm spending a lot of time in a predominantly Hasidic neighborhood. (No way can anybody tell me the Hasidim aren't a cult.)

I'd be interested in hearing about fb.netters' experiences with cults and the like.

The subject has interested me since college when a then-close friend disappeared inside an increasingly popular cult that does a great job of seeming legit but in reality functions as a way for the leader to get all the participants' money. (Her name's Diane but she's given herself an exotic name and a fancy title as the "sole" survivor of a Tibetan slash Native American sacred lineage -- yeah!)

i think it's heartbreaking to see anyone pushing a stroller

also disturbing if not heartbreaking is seeing the girls, say 12 or 14 years old, and knowing that in about 6 years they'll be pushing a stroller with 2-3 kids in tow and more on the way. as far as i can tell, hasidic girls are future baby machines in modest attire (their friggin wrists are covered) .

One thing is being a cult but the Hasidic cult look like complete idiots. They give the Amish a run for their money. Plus c'mon, they mutilate little boys and the rabbi actually uses his mouth to suck the blood after circumcision. Dang

I loved the Heaven's Gate cult, my absolute favorite. They were the ones who believed you needed Nike Tennis shoes and $5 in your pocket (apparently heaven has a cover charge) to hitch a ride on the Hail Bop Comet. If your gonna be a member of or create a cult, do it like these guys and go as bananas as you can. TERRA DE LU!!

For many, cults from different countries seem so exotic we can't dare to question or mock their harmless practices, but when it's in our own town, it's time to light up the torches and gather the pitchforks.

Are there political cults, 'cause there was this one girl who kept on attacking my opinion about the current war. It's amazing how aggressive some people can get.

I have a rather disturbing tale of an evening where two men, armed with a screw driver, told me they "needed to show me the truth" about how Jesus wasn't nice at all, and "it would only take a couple minutes, but we need to go outside." One of the scariest nights of my life, and I've had a few. Creepy, creepy bastards.

most religions have pretty silly stuff in them. sure, mormons have their talking lizard (a la sleestacks) and weird underwear, but i guess it's no weirder than 'eating' the body of christ and a virgin mary having kids or vows of chastity..

throw em all to the lions i say

The Mormon endowment ceremony is pretty much word-for-word a Masonic initiation rite, they even wear that dorky underwear with the Mason compass and rule (Mormons are supposed to burn them when done, or if they can´t, at least cut off the insignia). There´s an area of Barcelona called Sarriá is crawling with them, they all have this fervent calm about them, ack.

I once read that Mormonism was on several 'cult' lists, I've known some of them. One was a friend, actually, nice guy but conflicted. Mormonism as a religion frightens me, however. Actually, where was I... somewhere in Germany, I think, maybe Berlin, and I had this cute girl sit next to me. Turns out she was trying to convert me. Figures.
