I was shocked and chagrined to learn that a fb.netter who will not be named has never heard of or seen the most awesome movie Repo Man.
As an attempt to rectify a wrong and to get us talking on the movie that I can accurately say I watched at least 50 times, here are some links:

The soundtrack has some great songs, the first of which is Iggy doing the title track, which Frank went on to cover. Black Flag's "TV Party" and Suicidal Tendencies' "Institutionalized" and the Circle Jerks doing "Coup d'etat" and "When the shit hits the fan." Oh and The Plugz doing Secret Agent Man in Spanish.
I like to think the movie's appeal is timeless but maybe I'm just stuck in my happy mid-80s college days.

Listening to the Repo Man tribute makes me want to watch the movie again badly... and look what has a release date of April 16th, 2013!

The article I remember was something from the British press (NME or Melody Maker maybe) and it was about Frank answering questions about his favorite records. "What's your favorite record to drive to?", "What record would you like to have played at your funeral?"... questions like that.
The albums I remember Frank mentioning were Singles Going Steady by the Buzzcocks, The Beatles' White Album, and the Repo Man soundtrack. There were more, but I don't remember what they were. Probably the usual Stones and Dylan stuff he mentions a lot. |

The Repo Man soundtrack is probably in my top 20 albums. Also, I do recall Frank mentioning the album in some interview circa 1999. I'm SURE he is very familiar with it. Not only because he's covered "Repo Man", but it also seems like a very Frank sorta record, with all the classic 80s punk + Iggy + the Mexican flavor of some of it.
As for Alex Cox, he made a Mexican movie called Highway Patrolman in the 90s and has done some film writing. He contributed to a lengthy 1995 article in Film Comment magazine about Mexican cinema. He's also part of the commentary track on the DVD of Once Upon a Time in the West. |

Last week I bought the REPO MAN soundtrack. I had forgotten how good that was. Not a bad song on it, and the last instrumental track sounds so much like Surf Epic. No wonder Frank lists this record as one of his faves. So I've been yelling "We're gonna have a TV party tonight - ALRIGHT!" for the last 3 days.

I watched Straight to Hell recently and was very into the first half of the film and completely lost interest the second half. Twas a shame, especially since Jim Jarmusch had a cameo in the second half.

Apparently RM was never released in France.
Btw, Alex Cox also wrote, produced and directed "Straight to Hell", starring Joe Strummer, the Pogues, Elvis Costello, Jim Jarmusch, Dennis Hopper and Grace Jones. I've never seen it, but its soundtrack (which was recently re-issued with a bunch of bonus tracks) is a monument.

To be fair, I had never ever heard of that movie until Frank mentioned it a few years ago. I'm not sure it was ever released outside the US of A.
And yeah, it's an awesome movie.

I saw it once, a good few years ago. I can't remember it, exactly. I'd like to see it again-I believe it's recently been given the special edition DVD treatment!
