Man, have I ever gotten into this band lately.
I had heard some of their songs before, most notably "Teardrop" (lately from the TV show 'House M.D.') and "Angel" (from the first 'Matrix' movie). I went out and bought "Bluelines" and "Protection" from my local used bookstore for about $5.00 apiece, and have been hooked for the past week and a half. (And, rest assured, I will buy "Mezzanine" when I get paid next...)
Anyone else here into this band? My apologies if there has been a thread about them (like what happened with my Grant Lee Buffalo thread...) but the search feature still does not work for me.

100th Window was solely the work of del Naja anyway. It's like a weaker version of Mezzanine, except without the tunes.
The new single 'Live with Me' is pretty great, though. |

It isn't when you like none of these 2 bands...
glacial, I understand you. It's cool if you like Mezzanine. As I said, it was wildly acclaimed when it got released, so don't take my word on it.

Mezzanine has bringed so much for the music in general, it has been a real influence for a lot of bands. It's like: "Joy Division meets Nine Inch Nails in the 90's". Which is kind of a dream.

I have a slightly differing opinion of them coming in when I did, just recently than you, villainde. The first I heard of them were songs from "Mezzanine," which, I am finding out, is a complete 180 from anything they did before. The same thing happened to me with R.E.M.; the first songs I heard from them were "The One I Love" and "Man on the Moon," when I was about 14, and only after that I went out and picked up "Life's Rich Pageant" and "Fables of the Reconstruction" and the like.
For someone who was introduced to Massive Attack with "Bluelines" I can see why you would lose interest with them, villainde. Many of the elements that defined the original sound of the band (Tricky's vocals; the reggae influence) are just not there. To me, there are only a few common threads that even connect those albums with Mezzanine. It's like two different bands. But, not having the prior history with them (and being a big fan of groups like Nine Inch Nails and Tool) I am learning to appreciate both of their distinct musical sounds.
There is also another album released in 2003 called "100th Window." I am curious to know what it sounds like.

'Mezzanine' is quite a departure from the first two records, but a fine album nonetheless.
Daddy G's back on board for the new record, so good things can be expected. |

Yep I really love Blue Lines and Mezzanine especially, I think that these albums are one of the most innovative albums of the 90's (in fact I've been listening a lot to them the last week). Mezzanine is a really "tortured" and dark album in the good sense of the term, the atmospheres, the sound treatments and the songs are awesome. And Blue Lines is just one of the sexiest and gooviest records ever made IMO.
I didn't like their last album. I hope the next one will be great and that Mike Patton will bring them as much as Liz Fraser and Horace Andy did in the past.

I like. Though '100th Window' isn't their best, still some nice tracks. Great dark sound effects more than anything, but they do that so well.
So do you like Leftfield, too? |
