Posted - 01/21/2006 : 03:18:56 As far as I'm aware, the songs are licensed from the record labels that own the rights to the recording, so it's pretty much similar to a musician being compensated for your buying their CD in a shop. They'll get a cut of the sales (depending on the contract, and minus lots of corporate expenditure - see Steve Albini's essay for a full breakdown), which is paid to them as royalties. It'll be pretty much the same way as it's ever been.
