Does anyone know how the artists who make available their music on sites like these are compensated? Have any of you musicians dealt with this?

As far as I'm aware, the songs are licensed from the record labels that own the rights to the recording, so it's pretty much similar to a musician being compensated for your buying their CD in a shop. They'll get a cut of the sales (depending on the contract, and minus lots of corporate expenditure - see Steve Albini's essay for a full breakdown), which is paid to them as royalties. It'll be pretty much the same way as it's ever been.
