Posted - 01/02/2006 : 21:57:11 I just tried to log on to my favorite site for basstabs (mxtabs.net-RIP) only to find it closed down. WTF? Turns out the MPA (music pulisher's association) has banned tablature.
This is saddening because myself along with many other musicians learned how to play thanks to tab websites. Granted, there are many other sites online, but none of them are as good as mxtabs.net was. More importantly, what this pattern anal greed do to future generations of musicians? Perhaps these newer bands will stop sounding so much alike because the musicians will be forced into being orginal...making there own sounds.
Am I making sense? This could be a blessing and a curse.

Posted - 01/03/2006 : 14:33:18 Well, until we hear otherwise from mgmt, Frank, or one of the labels, you will continue to be able to find tabs, etc here. I have a feeling this is more of a greedy-major play than something that would affect indie artists, but who knows. Hard to fight a case saying we're costing the money when there is no FB or Pixies sheet music available - especially across the border in Canada. I wouldn't make too much of this...

That's it! What constitutes tablature? To the untrained eye, that's just a bunch o' chords. But to us, the mighty Pong.
Tab is so open to interpretation...there's nothing absolute about it. Take away the lyrics and those chords could be played two million ways.

I wonder if our tabs here would be deemed "illegal (and site owners jailed) even if fB himself gave the site his seal of approval. Like mislead says, "it's madness".
Then you just change them to...

Posted - 01/03/2006 : 10:48:59 I don't understand how a tab site can "deprive" a musician from making a living. In fact, it doesn't have anything to do with that. The MPA is acting out of selfishness. I'd even say they are ravishing the first amendment of a torn and tattered U.S. constitution. I'd say only about 1 percent of the music out there is published into purchasable sheet music.

I've learnt many a song through tab sites, and though this isn't one, i feel your loss, misterwoe.
Like you said, maybe a blessing. If it means the player will have to work out the tab for themselves, it's all good practise and preperation. I don't know about new sounds, though. The tab may be gone, but the songs still remain. |

Posted - 01/03/2006 : 09:11:01 This kind of story would be frightening if it wasn't so funny.
Also, some of those lyrics sites (the ones which offer only lyrics and no tabs) deserve to be shut down. Many exist only to install adware on Windows machines.

Posted - 01/03/2006 : 08:46:30 That explains why I haven't been able to google a lot of tabs recently.
It's madness. Does it mean they own the songs, to be able to do that? Not just the recordings...?

Posted - 01/03/2006 : 08:25:58 There have been shake-ups before over the years, like when Harmony Central/OLGA stopped showing all the lyrics of the songs to avoid copyright infringement. I wouldn't worry too much about it.
