I was driving home last night, flipping stations on the radio and I caught "We Don't Need No Education " mid-way through. Usually I would change the channel the second that song or any Pink Floyd came on, but for some reason I stayed there and listened.
It was on the Classic Rock station, and I don't want to sound like a snob, but I consider "classic rock" to be white trash anthems for aging "manly" men. which is why I'm always amazed by all the lame, faggy shit that they play: "Dream On" by Aerosmith, "One of These Nights" by the Eagles, anything by Queen, and Pink Floyd.
Pink Floyd. That song "Money" is just annoying, but "We Don't Need..." is so lame it makes me embarressed to even be in a room where it's playing. Any song that has kids singing is automatically gay, but having British kids sing AND try to sound like angry bad-asses is just too much. Plus there's no difference between the actual instrumental music of that song and disco. |

I had several PF albums in high school/college but didn't really listen since all the crappy 'classic' rock stations played the same 4 songs of theirs ad nauseum (as others have said).
but.
i watched them on Live8. I don't know if they played more than 5 songs but it changed my mind. It was fun to see them together and playing--wish you were here--thought that was awesome. though i did have a "who do they think they are reuniting after all this time-the pixies?" moment. |

If you put the CD on loop then it starts the synchronicities start catch up again toward the end of the movie, which at the point you are about midway through the album. Marijuana is not a necessary ingredient, by the way. Acid might be cool...

I tried that once long ago, we spent a whole night doing it till we thought we had it right. I think we decided that if you started the album on the third roar of the MGM lion that was best (or closest that it got to synching up). Certain things line up like when the tornado hits the synthesizers get a real sinister vibe to them. Also, when the witch first appears (riding her bike to Dorothy's house) is when you get all the timeclock chimes at the begining of "Time". And when she's trying to take Toto from Dorothy and Dorothy is making a lot of sudden head movements (looking from her mom to her dad and so forth) the music seems to accent it pretty much on point. Oh and when "Money" starts is right when the film goes from black and white to color.
Theres a lot of things that just didn't match up at all however, I pretty sure it's all coincidence. But still kind of interesting to try.
Did I mention we were all on acid too? That may have helped.

I'd like to do the Wizard of Oz thing at some point (without the getting stoned part). I have the movie, but not the Floyd album.

The thing that gets me about classic rock stations is that they try to come off with their Stern rip-off DJs and bad-ass promos like they're playing such hard-rocking shit- and if a few guys, say, neighbors, were going to get together and work on a car or something, they'd put the radio on the classic rock station because that's "safe" and they wouldn't have to worry about seeming like pussies- but really, Belly has ballads that are more "rocking".
Years ago, this girl I was friends with wanted to watch "The Wizard of Oz" on TCM and sync it up w/ Dark Side and get stoned but for some reason we just got stoned. If i ever go back to pot I give it a try. |

When Dark Side came out all the acid hippy's
hated it, and said Floyd sold out.
I was in high school when Meddle came out and it
was played in the music class I had at the time.
The gist was teaching us classical background. everybody was to stone to care.
DSM recording is now thought to be the best sonic
production..... NOT.
But as a whole production it maybe is the best ?
Ear candy for me can be Pixies - All Over The World. Far from Pink Floyd. Maybe the Dark Side of
the Pixies.

I grew up on mainstream Pink Floyd but in the past five years or so I picked up their early works. The second disc of Ummagumma has four live versions of songs from Piper's, Meddle and Saucerful. Enjoyable, in my opinion.

I always thought they were kind of interesting. I don't own a whole lot of there stuff however.
Even if your not the biggest fan the Pink Floyd in Pompeii video is pretty bad ass. One of my favorite concert DVD's. You gotta love a band thats willing to put their dog on lead vocals. |

How can anybody not like a song with lyrics like these? I'm not arguing agaisnt anybody's right to dislike a certain band or song, but I'm wondering if Jimmy hasn't been properly exposed to Pink Floyd. I mean, this is one of my favorite bands of all time, and I like to think that I have good tastes in music, seeing as how I'm a rabid Frank Black fan and all.
Moreover, Jimmy, you do sound like a snob for associating classic rock with white trash anthems. When you throw around adjectives such as "faggy" and "gay" to describe music it either reflects an extreme, unchecked sense of insecurity or a sincere lack of creativity.
Don't get me wrong. I too dislike most of the music a classic rock station would play. A lot of if sounds the same--just like today's top 40. Pink Floyd, on the other hand, transcends all of that. They're not like all of these other bands.
What do you have against children? It's not like this is an effect that Pink Floyd overdoes in any way. They only sing on a couple of songs. This proves you haven't heard the whole album. Instead, you've built your own wall, shutting yourself off from all that is pure, beautiful and true.
Do you like Tool? Or are they "faggy" too? I ask you this because they are often referred to as today's Pink Floyd.

I'll listen to classic rock stations occasionally. It's not generally my favorite kind of music, but it doesn't have me rushing to change the channel either.
As for Pink Floyd, I've heard a few songs I've liked, but I think they were mostly from the Syd era. Most of their popular stuff isn't bad, but it isn't great, either.

i was subjected to alot of floyd (and zepellin) growing up, but never really connected with them much.
sure i own dark side of the moon, but who doesn't.
but that was until about 6 months ago when i downloaded a show from dimeadozen.org. simply cause it looked interesting.
t'was a BBC show from 1971.

totally changed the way i looked at the floyd.
it contains a version of echoes which is quite possibly the greatest song ever recorded.
now, i'm kinda addicted again.
their early stuff is phenomenal (post syd that is)
but i'm finding that quite often the album versions of songs are not the best.....
love 'em.

I remember when I was of the mentality that classic rock was where it was at. I'm glad I escaped that. I can't even listen to those kinda stations anymore, I've heard it all so fucking much. Though when I worked at a place where we listened to a current Top 40 station all night long, the one night a week where we listened to classic rock was a breath of fresh air for me. At least I got to hear SOME good shit, like Green-Eyed Lady by Sugarloaf (I think I mainly like that song cuz Thinking Fellers Union Local 282 covered it).
As far as Floyd goes, I kinda like the mythology of them more than I enjoy listening to them; the fact that they're kinda the definitive 70's druggy band and there's all kinds of history built up around them and a lot of meaning behind the songs yet the band and the songs are still rather mysterious. I was never obsessed with them. I like how much people like them, though. I'd rather hear them than most of the other shit that gets played on classic rock staitons, though I'd rather hear lesser-known tracks than "Comfortably Numb," "Money" and "Another Brick."

Growing up in the '70s, I was subjected to Pink Floyd at high volume from my old man's stereo. I've heard Dark Side so many times that I really don't care to ever hear it again.
But sometimes I still gotta crank up Meddle. "One of These Days" is a monster instrumental blast. "Fearless," with its awesome open G riff, is their greatest song. Not wussy music at all. |
