Inspired whilst Christmas shopping, I happened upon a book called The 52 Most Depressing Songs You've Ever Heard, and The Carpenters, Goodbye to Love, was one of the songs on the list I have been listening to on and off the last year. At the moment it's John Doe's Twin Brother, which has been forcing a tear to my eye lately. Not to spoil the Christmas vibe, but what is yours?

I don't mean to take this to seriously, but as I was looking over the posts and thinking about the question, I think that it's very hard for a song to be "depressing". I think the closest any of the posts came to it was "Season's in the Sun", but even that is just sad. All I can think of is "Dust in the Wind" ( and I just want to make it clear that I hate that song).
I just think that all music, no matter how sad it might be, brings a reaction that is the opposite of depressing.

as said, it is all not extremely subtle (subtile?), but overall, it works. the album doesn't get me down, personally, when i listen to it (maybe also because the music is so great), but roger waters must have had a really hard time writing it.
i also watched the movie again, some days ago. it is like the album, just too fat. the most sad scenes are, when young pink finds the uniform of his daddy ("when the tiger broke free" - maybe the most sad song, but it is not on the album), and during "mother", when pink wants to touch his wife while she is sleeping, and she turns away. the ultimate symbol for absolute loneliness. oh god, there are times i can relate to this, and this brings me really down.
the following (and last) album ("the final cut") is the perfect follow-up. the wall has come down, and this album is just the smoke that comes up from the ashes. depression, pain, silent suffering, loneliness & absolutely no hope. musically very reduced. also fitting: the last words on the last song on the last pf-album: "the end"

Thanks for depressing me about my spelling Votat ;). Ya, I have fucking awful spelling, in that I never notice the weird shit I type, even when I read over it five times. Is there some way I can edit the thread topic to save my dignity? Another drepressive song of mine has to be a given, Wave of Mutialtion(UK Surf) and Superstar by The Carpenters. Mandocello by Cheap Trick and Sister Marie by Harry Nilsson are also pretty sad, plus something by Belle and Sebastian I can't remember now. Oh! Hot Burrito #1 and Dark End of the Street by the other Man, Gram give me the blues.

People think I'm crazy when I say this, but Thin Lizzy's "Boys are Back in Town" has always made me feel sad. I've mentioned this and people counter that it's a rah rah party song, but I don't see it. There's a pathos to it.

There's one nagging at me, but I don't know what it is, the name won't present itself. I thought of 'Death Of A Salesman' by Low, which is describing the act of giving up one's hopes and dreams to live a 'sensible' life. The majority of the song is depressing, but it does actually have a fairly happy ending.

And the singer's voice.
Like Thom Yorke or Ryan Adams.
But tunes with a wee bit of righteous anger as well re depressing to me. Like alot of Pink Floyd tunes.
